Kia EV6 Owner Frustrated with Recurrent 12V Battery Issues Submits Lemon Law Claim | Carscoops

The owner reports that his EV6 has required three or four new 12V batteries within a year, despite only accumulating 4,500 miles.

Kia EV6 models delivered in the United States have been equipped with inadequate lead-acid 12-volt batteries.

It is believed that by late 2024, Kia began installing improved AGM batteries in its electric vehicles.

The owner of a 2024 EV6 Wind RWD has filed a lemon law claim due to these issues.

One of the advantages of electric vehicles is the lower maintenance requirements compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. Ideally, that is the case, but one owner has discovered that his Kia EV6 is more trouble with ongoing electrical issues than a groundbreaking technological innovation. His 2024 model has gone through multiple 12-volt batteries in just a year, leading him to pursue a lemon law claim.

Although the EV6 has received widespread acclaim as an excellent electric vehicle, it does have its flaws. Over time, there have been various reports of battery malfunctions. This refers to the 12-volt battery, not the expensive high-voltage battery that powers the electric motors. A user from a Facebook group noted that he has had to replace three or four of these batteries and has also filed a lemon law claim.

Most Kia EV6s sold in the United States are fitted with conventional lead-acid 12-volt batteries instead of the more advanced AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries, which are generally regarded as superior. AGM batteries utilize a fiberglass mat to contain the electrolyte, providing better cycling performance and a longer lifespan.

The latest battery installed in this specific EV6 seems to be one of the lower-quality OEM lead-acid units, which clearly failed much earlier than expected.

A photo shared by the owner on the EV6 owner's Facebook page shows acid leaking from the faulty battery and damaging the tray underneath it. The owner states that his EV6 Wind RWD has only around 4,500 miles after a year of ownership, yet it has already undergone several 12-volt battery replacements.

The general opinion among other EV6 owners seems to be that the original 12-volt batteries provided by Kia are inadequate, and it's advisable to simply replace them with AGM batteries. It is puzzling that the dealership handling this case has not taken that step, especially since, according to users on Kia EV Forums, Kia started equipping EV6s with AGM batteries from the factory in late 2024.
