Mazda CX-6e Revealed, Appears to Be Our Version of the Tesla Model Y | Carscoops

The production version of last year's Arata EV concept is a collaborative effort between Mazda and China's Changan.

Mazda's upcoming CX-6e has been spotted testing for the first time. This compact electric SUV is being developed alongside the 6e sedan and is essentially a rework of the Deepal S07 from the Chinese automaker Changan.

So far, Mazda's journey into electrification has faced challenges. The MX-30 BEV received criticism for its limited driving range, and the CX-60 PHEV we tested for six months was far from refined. However, with the CX-6e expected to launch in the next 18 months, Mazda could position itself as a strong competitor in the EV market against the Tesla Model Y.

These spy shots reveal the compact electric SUV, which Mazda teased last week, during its first testing phase. It appears quite similar to the Arata concept showcased by Mazda in 2024, featuring a deep bumper design, a grille reminiscent of Cadillac, and a two-tier lighting setup where ultra-slim daytime running lights emerge from beneath the hood’s leading edge.

The elevated waistline and fairly low roofline create narrow windows, which may hinder children's views, but along with the sharply angled rear window, they give the CX-6e an almost coupe-like look, particularly with the supercar-style C-pillar openings.

The extensive camouflage makes it impossible to confirm whether this prototype has illuminated 'Mazda' branding on its rear, as seen in the concept, but given that brands like Porsche and VW are already incorporating lit emblems, it's likely Mazda will follow suit. Whether the production model will also feature illuminated lettering on the door sills remains uncertain. Nonetheless, the concept's camera-based door mirrors have made the transition, albeit with slightly bulkier versions for the street.

Mazda can take credit for the aesthetic design of the CX-6e and its 6e sedan counterpart, but much of the underlying technology is borrowed. The pair is built on Changan's EPA1 platform, which is also utilized by models such as the Deepal S07, a sporty SUV released in the domestic market in 2023.

If the dimensions of the CX align with those of the S07, Mazda's contender against the Model Y will measure approximately 4,750 mm (187 inches) in length and have a wheelbase of around 2,900 mm (114.2 inches). Based on the specifications of the S07, it could be available with 68.8 kWh and 80 kWh battery options and a single, rear-mounted electric motor with a power range of 215-255 hp (160-190 kW / 218-255 PS). We will have to wait to learn the exact outputs and range for Mazda's variant.

Mazda has not disclosed any interior images of the Atara, but it's reasonable to expect significant similarities with the 6e sedan, which has been revealed in its production form and features a premium cabin with a large 14.6-inch central touchscreen.

The CX-6e is expected to be available in Europe by 2027 and could pose a greater challenge to Tesla’s Model Y, whose popularity may be waning. However, as it is produced in China, this stylish electric SUV will not be available to US consumers, who will need to await the electric SUV that Mazda is developing independently.
