The Inster-based electric concept features large boxy arches and an imposing rear wing, while still offering an impressive sound system.
Hyundai has unveiled an electric concept drawing inspiration from the gaming realm.
The Insteroid clearly evolves from last autumn’s RN24 rolling lab drift concept.
No specifics on the power output have been provided, but it may utilize the Ioniq 5 N’s 641 hp configuration.
With a modest 95 hp (97 PS), Hyundai’s Inster EV is quite distant from the Ioniq 5 N in reality. However, in the imaginative realm where the new Insteroid concept exists, it’s the Ioniq 5 N that seems underwhelming.
The name combines "Inster" and "Steroid," and it’s evident that the small EV looks like it’s been on an extensive Trenbolone cycle, based on how much the large boxy fenders protrude from the main body. The rear ends of this follow-up to last fall’s similarly designed RN24 drift concept are so wide that the entire wheel seems to sit outside the standard bodywork, rendering the back doors unnecessary.
Aerodynamic modifications include a deep front bumper with an integrated splitter, saw-tooth slats above the front wheels reminiscent of a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and a massive hoop spoiler on the rear hatch. It evokes memories of either a 1980s Group B MG Metro 6R4 or Suzuki's formidable Pikes Peak-championing Escudo.
The interior complements the exterior's motorsport theme with a complete roll cage, bucket seats, and absence of carpeting. However, taking cues from gaming and tuning cultures, it also incorporates an integrated Beat House sound system and playful space invader graphics.
Hyundai has not disclosed what lies beneath the Insteroid’s hood, but it will need to exceed the Inster’s standard single-motor drive powertrain to justify the extravagant aerodynamic features. As this is a concept vehicle, we can envision it featuring the 641 hp (650 PS) dual-motor drivetrain from the Ioniq 5 N, which allowed the RN24 concept to execute its smoky drifts; the Insteroid essentially represents that car in a more flamboyant guise.
“This project enabled us to fully explore uninhibited creativity, drawing inspiration from video games to establish an emotional and captivating vision of Hyundai’s brand,” stated Eduardo Ramírez, Chief Designer at Hyundai Design Europe.
In other words, don’t anticipate seeing this in a Hyundai dealership anytime soon, although some ideas may be adapted for a more subdued, yet still sporty Inster variant. However, considering Renault has just announced limited production of the new 5 Turbo 3E, some at Hyundai might be contemplating whether to proceed with a full realization of the concept.
