The launch of Toyota’s Baby Land Cruiser FJ has been postponed until 2026 | Carscoops

The new compact Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be unveiled in the first half of 2026, with a global release afterward, including availability in North America.

Toyota is developing a smaller Land Cruiser model, now anticipated to launch next year.

An earlier teaser showcased a compact off-roader featuring rugged design and a boxy profile.

The Land Cruiser FJ may utilize a ladder-frame chassis similar to that of the Hilux Champ.

Update: New information has emerged regarding the highly awaited Land Cruiser FJ—or potentially FJ Cruiser, depending on the source. Current reports indicate that its debut has been postponed from fall this year to early 2026.

Japanese sources indicate that production delays and order halts for the larger Land Cruiser 250, along with certification issues, are significant reasons for the delay. Additionally, the ongoing trade conflicts initiated by recent government policies have likely complicated production plans not just for the FJ but for a range of vehicles. We have updated this information accordingly.

The Land Cruiser brand has long been associated with outstanding off-road performance, so it is expected that Toyota will maintain this legacy with its upcoming models. Among these is the highly-anticipated compact SUV thought to be based on ladder-frame construction. This smaller Land Cruiser is now projected to make its debut later this year, potentially featuring the FJ name.

The new model was first teased in 2023, positioned as the smallest variant in the Land Cruiser lineup, which also includes the classic 70 Series, the modern 250 Series (available in North America), and the 300 Series (not sold in the U.S.). A subsequent trademark application fueled speculation about the potential use of the Land Cruiser FJ branding for this compact off-roader.

      Compact Dimensions, Rugged Aesthetics

The sole teaser image has led to speculative renderings that suggest a boxy SUV inspired by the 2021 Toyota Compact Cruiser EV concept. Retaining an upright stance and modern LED features, the production version seems to be slightly larger, showcasing significant ground clearance, durable tires, and a flat tailgate equipped with a spare wheel.

The Land Cruiser FJ is projected to have dimensions marginally larger than the Corolla Cross yet likely smaller than the RAV4. Initial estimates indicate a length of about 4,500 mm (177.2 inches), a width of 1,830 mm (72 inches), and a height of 1,850 mm (72.8 inches), with a wheelbase measuring 2,750 mm (108.3 inches).

If accurate, these measurements make the Land Cruiser FJ considerably smaller than North America's Land Cruiser, which stretches to 4,925 mm (193.9 inches), while being larger than the 4,387 mm (172.7 inches) Ford Bronco Sport.

      Ladder-Frame Structure

With the exception of the Suzuki Jimny, most small and compact SUVs have moved to unibody structures. Fortunately for those seeking adventure, the Land Cruiser FJ is rumored to utilize a ladder frame chassis.

Rather than adopting the TNGA-F platform found in the larger Land Cruiser 250 and 300 Series, the compact off-roader is believed to be built on the IMV 0 architecture shared with the Toyota Hilux Champ/Ranga pickup.

This choice upholds the rugged Land Cruiser tradition while enabling Toyota to offer the vehicle at a more competitive price point. The SUV is expected to boast improved noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) characteristics and enhanced driving dynamics compared to the Hilux Champ, which is designed for affordability in developing markets.

Additionally, it is anticipated to feature a standard 4WD system with a Torsen limited-slip differential, enhancing its ability to navigate challenging terrains alongside generous ground clearance and robust tires.

      Powertrain Possibilities

There is considerable speculation surrounding the powertrain offerings for the upcoming Land Cruiser FJ (or its eventual name). Earlier reports suggested the availability of both internal combustion and hybrid engines, with the potential for an all-electric variant to follow.

However, more recent updates indicate that plans for hybrid engines have been abandoned in favor of a conventional gasoline powertrain. This information should be approached with caution, as powertrain options may differ by region. Given market trends, Toyota will likely introduce a hybrid version outside Japan, particularly in North America and Europe, where fuel efficiency and emissions reduction are prioritized.

One probable engine for the Land Cruiser FJ is the naturally aspirated 2.7-liter four-cylinder 2TR-FE gasoline engine. This engine is currently in use in the Thai-spec Hilux Champ as well as in the EU and JDM versions of the Land Cruiser Prado (250 Series). However, it may be limited to markets like Japan and other Asian regions where the Hilux Champ is sold.

In these areas, the engine produces 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 246 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque, coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission and
