'IM Presented by MG Motor' Could Be The Most Absurd Car Brand Name So Far | Carscoops

We're serious; this is the name chosen by the SAIC Group for its newly launched brand in Australia.

IM Motors is set to launch in Australia as IM Presented by MG, featuring high-performance electric vehicles.

This brand, part of the SAIC Group, offers 400V, 800V, and 900V architectures.

As with other Chinese electric vehicles, these models are unlikely to be available in the United States.

IM Motors is preparing to enter Australia's rapidly expanding EV market, which is already largely influenced by Chinese vehicles. However, the company is making a somewhat unconventional choice with its branding: the cars will be marketed under the newly introduced IM Presented by MG Motor brand. Let’s take a moment to absorb that name—it’s not the easiest to say. Nevertheless, despite the peculiar name, the company intends to launch two noteworthy models locally.

The IM5 and IM6, which are already available in China under the names L6 and LS6, will take the spotlight. There is no official reason given for the name change in Australia, but we know that both vehicles will be manufactured in right-hand drive as a result of collaboration among SAIC, Alibaba, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech.

Currently, IM Presented by MG Motor has not revealed many details about the Australian versions of these vehicles. However, it’s reasonable to expect that they will closely resemble the models currently offered in China. The sleek IM5 will compete with the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4, being both longer and wider than those options, and it is expected to be priced starting around AU$70,000 (approximately $44,200 at current exchange rates), with a top price around AU$95,000 (~$60,000).

In China, IM offers both the sedan and SUV with 400V, 800V, and 900V electric architectures and battery pack options of 75 kWh, 83 kWh, and 100 kWh. Entry-level rear-wheel drive models produce 290 hp (216 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm), while the top variants generate an impressive 776 hp (579 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm). The IM5 sedan reportedly can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.74 seconds, while the SUV achieves this in 3.48 seconds.

Similar to many other new EVs from China, the interiors of both vehicles are heavily focused on technology and feature a wealth of luxurious materials. Notable features include a large console screen for climate control, reminiscent of those found in a Porsche Taycan, and a single panoramic display serving as both the gauge cluster and infotainment system.

They are also equipped with dual wireless phone chargers, cupholders, and various accessories, including a small table and a sizable wireless charging pad capable of accommodating devices or even reading lamps.

“We are excited to introduce IM Presented by MG Motor to the Australian market, establishing a new standard for luxury electric driving,” stated Peter Ciao, CEO of MG Motor Australia, according to Drive. “With innovative technology enveloped in elegant design, both the IM5 and IM6 provide an unparalleled combination of performance, refinement, and range—granting drivers the freedom to travel further in complete comfort. This is the future of premium electric mobility, and we’re proud to bring it to Australia, expanding our EV offerings for Australian drivers.”
