Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 Might Feature Over 500 HP EV With Artificial V8 Sounds | Carscoops

      The revamped Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 is poised to be a high-performance electric vehicle.

      Reports indicate that it may feature a tri-motor setup with over 500 horsepower.

      This four-door coupe is expected to include active aerodynamics and a “V8 Mode.”

      Mercedes introduced the redesigned CLA yesterday, revealing new information about the forthcoming AMG variants. Notably, the CLA 45 may return as an electric model boasting more than 500 horsepower.

      While official details remain sparse, Mercedes' Chief Technical Officer, Markus Schäfer, mentioned to Autocar that they have “established a second pillar concerning powertrains – keyword Yasa.” This subtly hints at the axial flux motors created by their Yasa subsidiary.

      Axial flux motors were anticipated to be reserved for high-end models, like the AMG SUV, but Schäfer clarified that they will be “available across all model lines.”

      Additional information is scarce, but reports suggest the CLA 45 EV might feature a tri-motor powertrain with “advanced torque-vectoring capabilities.” Insiders have even hinted that the vehicle could exceed 500 horsepower (373 kW / 507 PS), marking a significant increase from the current model’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which produces 416 horsepower (310 kW / 422 PS). This allows the CLA 45 S to accelerate to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just four seconds.

      The standard model is equipped with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery; however, the AMG version is expected to utilize an “oil-cooled battery that incorporates unique cylindrical cells and chemistry for enhanced energy density.” We should also anticipate an active rear wing and a “V8 Mode,” designed to mimic the sound of a powerful V8 engine.
