Although this compact electric hatchback is affordably priced, it possesses all the essential features to make it an attractive option.

The BYD Dolphin competitor is powered by a 134 hp electric motor and is available with 34-44 kWh battery options.

The top model provides a maximum range of 260 miles (420 km) on a single charge.

It is equipped with a 14.6-inch infotainment display and a Level 2 driver-assist system.

When the GAC Aion UT was launched last November, expectations were low, if not entirely doubtful. After all, it is entering a saturated market dominated by established brands such as BYD and MG, which have already set high standards for affordable electric vehicles. However, to everyone’s surprise: the Aion UT has arrived and is priced lower than anticipated.

Initially expected to start around $13,800 in China, this compact electric vehicle is now available for as little as ¥69,800 (approximately $9,600 at current exchange rates), while the top model costs around ¥101,800 (~$14,000). For reference, that price is significantly below that of many used cars, let alone a brand-new electric vehicle.

Considering the car’s low cost, one might assume it lacks creature comforts, has poor performance, and offers limited range. Yet, as Chinese automakers have repeatedly demonstrated in recent years, they have mastered the ability to deliver affordable EVs with good range and technological features. The Aion UT will come with 34.8 kWh and 44 kWh battery options, including configurations of 44.257 kWh, 44.12 kWh, and 44.133 kWh.

GAC asserts that the base model can travel up to 205 miles (330 km) on a single charge, while the flagship version can achieve up to 260 miles (420 km). Although China’s testing procedures are often quite lenient, GAC specifies a combined consumption rate of 11.4 kWh/100 km. The battery packs can be charged from 30% to 80% in approximately 24 minutes, and the vehicle is powered by a 134-hp electric motor.

The Aion UT’s design can be characterized as cute. It is available in various bright colors with contrasting white roofs, giving it a lively, almost cheerful appearance. The front features soft, rounded headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights, along with four additional LED driving lights on the bumper—reminiscent of the older Kia Cerato models that tried hard but succeeded in a quirky way. The base version comes with 16-inch wheels, while higher trims upgrade to 17-inch alloys.

The interior is impressively outfitted, given the vehicle’s pricing. All Aion UT variants are equipped with an 8.8-inch digital instrument panel, a 14.6-inch infotainment screen, and a voice assistant. It also includes Level 2 driver-assistance features, built-in WiFi, a panoramic sunroof, and supports over-the-air software updates.
