Mercedes is set to replace the unappealing EQE with a more traditionally-styled E-Class EV, and the first test mule has been spotted.

The prototype features an EQE body, but the final version will sport a more classic sedan design. Both the electric and internal combustion engine variants of the E-Class will bear a resemblance to each other despite having different platforms.

Recently, Mercedes revealed that it is developing a fully electric E-Class, and our spy photographers have managed to capture what appears to be an early prototype of the forthcoming luxury sedan. Scheduled for a 2027 release as a successor to the rather forgettable EQE, this new model aims to resemble more of a traditional, ICE-powered E-Class, appealing to those who haven't quite embraced the EQE's aesthetics.

Seen during cold-weather testing, the prototype was entirely uncovered but cleverly disguised with EQE bodywork to mislead observers. From afar, it might be mistaken for an EQE, but a closer look uncovers typical prototype indicators: awkward wheel placement and temporary bolt-on fender extensions.

Mercedes has stated that the all-electric E-Class will feature a "status-oriented" wheelbase. The wheel positioning in the prototype suggests it will be shorter than the 3,120 mm (122.8 inches) of the electric EQE but longer than the 2,961 mm (116.6 inches) of the current W214 E-Class.

A teaser released by Mercedes earlier this month showcased the silhouette of the upcoming E-Class. The sedan appears to move away from the contentious design of the EQE, opting for more conventional proportions, including a longer hood, a more upright windshield, and an extended rear overhang.

This new design approach stems from a strategy that aims for visual parity between Mercedes' EV and ICE models. The company also teased two covered sedans with a noticeable bulge on the hood, hinting at a reimagined Mercedes ornament or an enhanced grille surround. However, it remains uncertain whether these vehicles represent the future E-Class or the next generation S-Class, which will also come in both EV and ICE options.

Despite the promised visual similarities, the two versions of the E-Class are anticipated to be built on different platforms. The electric version is expected to utilize the MB.EA architecture, while the ICE variant might continue with the existing MRA2 framework. It's reasonable to expect that improvements in EV technology will yield better range figures compared to the outgoing EQE, which is based on EVA underpinnings.

Moreover, Mercedes has assured that the new electric E-Class will offer "benchmark interior noise comfort." The executive sedan will also incorporate next-generation ADAS technologies, granting it L2++ and L3 highway capabilities. Additionally, the latest advancements in software and connectivity will be featured in the cabin.

The debut of the electric Mercedes E-Class is anticipated by 2027. By that time, the ICE-powered W214 E-Class will be four years old, making it the ideal moment for a significant mid-cycle refresh. In the coming years, we expect Mercedes to transition from mules to camouflaged prototypes of the electric sedan with the final production body.
