The BMW iX leads J.D. Power's 2025 EV Satisfaction Study, surpassing Tesla and Rivian in ratings.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 excels among mass-market electric vehicles, achieving the highest satisfaction ratings in the study.
A significant 94% of electric vehicle owners express a strong desire to continue with electric vehicles for their next purchase.
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, but not all models satisfy their owners equally. A recent study indicates that EV owners in the United States are generally content with their vehicles, with the BMW iX recognized as the highest-rated model. Despite a sales decline of 11% last year to 15,383 units, the all-electric German SUV has gained the loyalty of its owners, ranking above many more commonly recognized EVs in overall satisfaction.
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Ownership Study evaluated vehicles on a 1,000-point scale across various critical aspects, including battery range, ownership costs, driving enjoyment, range accuracy, access to public charging, ease of home charging, design, safety and technology features, service experience, and overall quality and reliability. This year, the study collected feedback from 6,164 owners of 2024 and 2025 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
The BMW iX achieved a score of 790 out of 1,000, securing the top overall position and leading the premium BEV category. Its nearest competitor was the BMW i4 with a score of 783. This was followed by the Rivian R1S at 770, Tesla Model 3 at 767, and Polestar 2 at 764. The average rating for premium BEVs was 756, with the Tesla Model Y (749), Audi Q8 e-tron (722), and Cadillac Lyriq (717) falling short of this average.
Among mass-market BEVs, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 led with a score of 751. However, one could argue that the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y should also be categorized as mass-market BEVs instead of premium. Other notable performers were the Kia EV6 at 743, Chevrolet Equinox EV at 737, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 at 728.
Additional Insights:
The study also inquired about the education and training provided to owners by dealerships or manufacturers. Although 69% of first-time BEV buyers received some education, more could be done to enhance ownership satisfaction.
A considerable majority of EV owners are enthusiastic about remaining with electric vehicles. In fact, 94% indicated they are likely to consider purchasing another EV for their next vehicle. Brent Gruber, the executive director of J.D. Power’s EV practice, stated, “once consumers enter the EV fold, they’re highly likely to remain committed to the technology.”
The top ranking of the BMW iX highlights how satisfaction can differ from sales numbers, emphasizing the significance of the ownership experience in fostering consumer loyalty.
