Kia PV5 Van: A VW ID.Buzz Inspired by Future Design, Not by the Past

It seems that Volkswagen won't be the only brand offering a fun electric van for much longer. During the 2025 Kia EV Day—which, as you might have guessed, was a day entirely focused on Kia electric vehicles—Hyundai’s sibling brand introduced several new electric models, including the EV4 and the EV2 crossover. However, one model captured attention more than the rest: the Kia PV5 electric van.

The PV5 will be the first vehicle constructed on Kia’s new electric Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) … well, platform. This specialized EV architecture allows the PV5 van to be very spacious, technologically advanced, and adaptable. For instance, it can be configured as the PV5 Passenger van for families, the PV5 Cargo van, the PV5 Crew work van, and even the PV5 Wheelchair Access Vehicle.

The designs of these versions are quite intuitive. The Passenger variant accommodates eight people (2+3+3), the Cargo version includes a large empty area separated from the front cabin, the Crew seats five with a smaller walled-off cargo space, and the WAV is equipped with a wheelchair ramp for easy access through the side doors and rear. This ramp is also robust, capable of supporting 661 pounds.

Given the PV5’s multifunctional purpose, its appearance resembles more of a work van from Cyberpunk 2077 than a conventional minivan, even in its Passenger variant. It features a boxy, vertical design with large, tall windows. That said, it does not look unattractive; rather, it looks impressive. The design feels like it was initially intended for a sci-fi movie but was ultimately put into production. The cab-over-style front, upright windshield, and stylish upward curve in the shoulder line where the doors meet give the PV5 a distinctive edge over other vans available. Its futuristic look surpasses even that of Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz, which, while optimistic in design, still draws inspiration from the past. Kia has clearly focused on a vision of the future, even if it may lean toward a dystopian aesthetic.

This distinctive design theme carries over to the interior as well. The PV5’s cabin is straightforward, featuring horizontal lines, angular shapes, and materials that seem easy to maintain. Even the flooring is crafted from Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO), which is sturdy and can be easily cleaned. While this approach may not be as vibrant or thrilling as the interior of the ID.Buzz or even Kia's own excellent Carnival, it is functional, and that brings its own appeal.

Kia will provide two battery options for all configurations initially—a 51.5-kilowatt-hour unit and a 71.2-kWh one—with the PV5 Cargo receiving a third option of 43.3-kWh. Kia asserts that the 71.2-kWh PV5 Passenger version will offer a range of 186 miles, powered by a single front electric motor generating 160 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.

As for whether the PV5 will be available in North America, there are currently no updates on that front, but one can hope. It is set to launch in Korea and Europe later this year, with plans for distribution in other markets by 2026.
