Donald Trump stated that specific tariffs on the European Union will be announced “very soon.”
In 2023, the United States imported about 19.7% of all exports coming from the EU.
Germany stands as the largest European exporter of goods to the US, with exports amounting to $157 billion.
Alongside his announcement regarding the anticipated tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which will take effect in April after a month-long delay, US President Donald Trump has also indicated plans to impose 25% tariffs on European Union goods, including automobiles. As previous events have shown, Trump's proposed tariffs on the EU may serve as a negotiating strategy, or he may be fully committed to enforcing them.
During his initial cabinet meeting, which was attended by numerous reporters, Trump mentioned that he would be revealing the details of the EU tariffs “very soon,” emphasizing that “it’ll be 25% in general, and that will apply to cars and other products.” According to Trump, “The European Union was created to undermine the United States – that’s its purpose, and they’ve succeeded. But now I’m president.”

The United States is the largest market for EU goods, accounting for 19.7% of all exports from the bloc in 2023, surpassing the UK, China, and Switzerland. Cars represented the second-largest category of imports from the EU to the US, valued at around €40 billion ($41 billion), following medicinal and pharmaceutical products.
Germany is the top European exporter to the US, with goods exported from Germany valued at $157 billion in 2023, including roughly $24.3 billion in cars. In contrast, the US exported approximately $9 billion worth of vehicles to Germany that same year.
The European Union promptly rejected Trump’s claims that it was established to harm the US, stating that the bloc has actually “been beneficial for the United States,” according to the BBC.
“We are ready to collaborate if you adhere to the rules. However, we will also protect our consumers and businesses at every opportunity. They expect nothing less from us.”
During the same meeting, the President confirmed that the proposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which were put on hold for 30 days after intense negotiations, are now set to take effect on April 2 as originally planned.
