A 72-year-old man physically confronted a teenager following a road rage episode in Grand Cayman.
The clash involved a Cybertruck and a Hyundai Kona merging into the same lane.
This incident has ignited public discourse regarding the treatment of expatriates versus local Caymanians.
Road rage incidents are not uncommon, but when they feature a Tesla Cybertruck, an elderly businessman, and a 17-year-old, they are sure to attract media attention, even in a serene locale like the Cayman Islands. A 72-year-old man has become the focus of a police inquiry after being recorded assaulting a driver who allegedly cut in front of him and his Tesla Cybertruck. While law enforcement apprehended the 17-year-old involved, the older driver received only a warning, a decision that has upset local residents.
The confrontation took place approximately a week ago in Grand Cayman. As per local reports, Larry McGean was driving his Tesla Cybertruck with his wife when a teenage driver in a Hyundai Kona merged into his lane. McGean reportedly had to jam on the brakes to avert a collision and was displeased with the 17-year-old's driving.
According to the Cayman Marl Road, McGean confronted the driver of the Kona. Video circulating on social media depicts the expatriate engaged in a heated dispute with the young Hyundai driver before McGean seemingly opened the door and lunged at him. Although the subsequent events are unclear, it appears that as McGean tried to enter the cabin, the teenager swiftly put him in a chokehold.
An ambulance that happened to be passing by stopped, and its crew intervened to separate the two men. McGean sustained a cut to his face during the incident. Despite allegedly initiating the aggression, he was issued only a warning for the intended prosecution of Common Assault. In contrast, the 17-year-old driver of the Hyundai was arrested on suspicion of Assault Causing Bodily Harm.
Local authorities are asking motorists who witnessed the incident to reach out with any valuable information they might have. However, officials have faced criticism from many locals for not arresting McGean thus far, especially with footage showcasing his engagement in the conflict. This situation has raised broader questions about the treatment of affluent expatriates in comparison to local Caymanians.
The incident continues to draw attention both online and in the community, with many awaiting additional updates from the ongoing police investigation.
