At times, a model name can be quite straightforward. Consider the new Kia Concept EV2. We recognize that it’s a concept vehicle, it’s electric, and it ranks below the EV3 in size and price. Initially revealed as a design study, it is slated for production next year.

Kia categorizes the EV2 within the SUV segment, although we would argue that it resembles more of a tall hatchback or a crossover. Nevertheless, the name EV2 suggests that this model will occupy the entry-level position in Kia's electric lineup, contrasting sharply with the larger, three-row EV9. The question of how low Kia can go is a good one. There might be an opportunity for a compact hatchback beneath the EV2, possibly an electric successor to the Picanto offered in Europe, although General Motors may not be pleased to see the EV1 name used by a competitor.

In terms of design, the EV2’s tall, boxy shape is reminiscent of the Soul, yet its roofline has a slightly more rounded appearance. The front end is upright and features vertical lights that are not shielded by a lens, while the profile showcases thick black plastic cladding, often associated with a “rugged” design. At the rear, Kia has positioned the lights towards the edges of the hatch to accentuate the EV2’s width.

The rear-hinged doors are a nice touch, but they are unlikely to transition from the concept display to actual production. On the subject of floors, Kia highlights that the electric platform enabled its designers to create a completely flat floor and a modular interior. The rear seat cushions can be flipped up, allowing front passengers to recline their seats fully. Additionally, Kia has included removable door speakers so that the entertainment can move outside, and occupants can even send text messages through the windows (yes, really) to communicate with pedestrians and other drivers.

Details on how this feature operates have not been provided, although it is likely linked to a smartphone. This is yet another aspect that might stay within the concept phase, and it raises questions, to say the least. What message could be significant enough to show on a window but can wait long enough to type? Perhaps just a friendly note like the one illustrated here.

Kia has yet to disclose any concrete technical specifications. All that is certain is that the EV2 is electric, with no indication of a hybrid version being available. While this is purely speculative, I suspect that the concept is built on the modular E-GMP platform that supports several other EVs in the Kia and Hyundai portfolios, including the previously mentioned EV9 and EV3, with both companies unveiling significant plans around it.

The production version of the Kia EV2 is expected to launch in Europe in 2026. There is currently no information regarding its release in the United States.
