Report: Mercedes-AMG is set to reintroduce the V8 engine in the C63.
Mercedes-AMG
Enthusiasts expressed discontent when the Mercedes-AMG C63 transitioned from a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 to a hybrid configuration utilizing a 2.0-liter turbo-four. Initially, executives suggested that fans should “deal with it,” and AMG’s CEO firmly “denied” any rumors regarding the return of the V8. However, a recent report indicates that V8 power is set to make a comeback in the C63 within the next few years.
According to unnamed sources cited by British magazine Autocar, the new V8 that AMG has confirmed is in development will be fitted within the C63's accentuated fenders by 2026. While official information on the engine is not yet available, sources claim it will heavily borrow from the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the previous-generation C63 and still present in several AMG models, including the SL63.
If this information is accurate, the eight-cylinder engine will receive significant updates but will not be entirely new. One of the notable changes reported by Autocar involves a switch from a cross-plane crankshaft to a flat-plane crankshaft. This modification is expected to enhance throttle response and push the redline higher. Additionally, it will allow engineers to create a smaller crankcase, making it feasible to incorporate the V8 into models not originally designed for such an engine, like the current C-Class. It’s reported that AMG will utilize an artificial sound generator to simulate some of the exhaust tone that may be diminished due to the flat-plane crank; however, many believe that the presence of a V8 should suffice to satisfy enthusiasts.
Mild-hybrid 48-volt technology will help maintain fuel efficiency while providing bursts of electric power to the driveline. Although specifications such as horsepower, torque, and weight remain undisclosed, the V8 is still in development, and AMG has not commented on the rumors.
For context, the current-generation C63 employs a plug-in hybrid drivetrain featuring a 2.0-liter turbo-four, a rear-mounted electric motor, and a 6.1-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. This setup delivers a remarkable 671 horsepower and 752 lb-ft of torque, but the C63's weight approaches 4,800 pounds. In contrast, its 3,900-pound predecessor had a twin-turbo V8 that produced 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque in S trim.
Despite the substantial power increase, the new C63 has not resonated with consumers, with many noting that while it is fast, it lacks character. In Germany, a tuner called Vuk Manufaktur even discovered a way to retrofit a current-generation C63 with a V8. Historically, the C63 has been one of AMG’s top-selling models, and the transition from a V8 to hybrid power has reportedly led to “a significant drop in sales,” according to Autocar.
Remember that nothing has been officially confirmed yet. This remains a rumor, and Mercedes-AMG has refrained from commenting on it.
“Mercedes-AMG is developing a new V8 engine. However, please understand that we do not discuss future product plans,” a spokesperson stated.
According to the same report, the CLE63, expected to debut by late 2025, will be the first to feature the new engine, so we won't have to wait long for more information. If the rumor holds true, it will be intriguing to see whether the V8 will replace the C63’s hybrid system or if both will be available together. It’s plausible that the V8 might not be sold in markets such as Europe, where emissions regulations are stricter.
Meanwhile, BMW has already confirmed that the next-generation M3 will be available with both a straight-six engine and an electric powertrain.
