Kia aims for a fun experience in all its EV4 sedans and hatchbacks by incorporating the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N's paddle-shift technology.
Kia plans to provide every model of its EV4 crossover with a simulated manual transmission. While all versions will feature these simulated shifts, only the sporty GT variant will include a (simulated) rev limiter.
Last week, Kia unveiled the first images of the EV4 and will share complete technical specifications on February 27.
The upcoming EV4 is poised to be a highly sought-after option in the budget-friendly EV market, and we have obtained exclusive information that enhances its appeal. A source with insider information at Kia revealed that each version of the EV4 will include a simulated manual gearshift—akin to what is found in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and the recently updated Kia EV6 GT.
Kia and its parent company, Hyundai, have been exploring methods to make electric vehicles (EVs) more engaging for driving enthusiasts, and the EV4 is set to benefit from this strategy. The simulated manual gearshift system allows drivers to “shift” through virtual gears via paddle shifters, with the software modulating power delivery to replicate the behavior of a traditional internal combustion engine.
Although this feature was initially intended for Hyundai-Kia’s high-performance vehicles, Kia has opted to introduce it across the entire EV4 lineup. This means even the base models will allow drivers to experience simulated gear changes, potentially making EVs feel more familiar to those transitioning from combustion engines.
However, although all EV4s will feature the simulated paddle-shift technology, only the high-performance EV4 GT, which will arrive later, will take this a step further by incorporating a fake rev limiter for added driving excitement. This rev limiter is designed to mimic the sensation of reaching the redline, prompting drivers to shift “gears” at the appropriate time for optimal acceleration.
In the Ioniq 5 N, this system is complemented by synthetic engine sounds and even simulated torque dips between shifts to enhance the experience. It remains uncertain whether the EV4 GT will provide the same features, but it is likely to follow a similar approach, bringing a fun, enthusiast-oriented aspect to the model.
We understand that the EV5 SUV will not include the fake manual technology when it launches in Europe and America later this year, as it is an older model that has been available in China for some time. However, it may receive this feature as part of a mid-cycle update in a few years.
Kia recently released exterior images of the EV4 in both sedan and hatchback variants, showing that the production model, set to be released later this year, has only slightly changed from the 2023 concept. However, details about the interior design and technology specifications remain under wraps, although we have previously shared spy shots revealing a dashboard that closely resembles the concept.
We will learn more about the interior and mechanical features of the crossover during its complete reveal at Kia’s EV Day 2025 in Spain on February 27, alongside the production version of the PV5 van and an EV2 concept.
