VW's Most Affordable ID Electric Vehicle to Launch in 2027 Priced at Only €20,000 | Carscoops

      The ID. 1, also referred to as ID. One, is tailored for Europe, merging an economical price with superior quality.

      Volkswagen has introduced a new entry-level electric vehicle (EV) for the European market, expected to be named the ID. One.

      This EV will be one of nine new models being launched by 2027, expanding Volkswagen's offerings.

      The starting price for the ID. One will be €20,000, while the production version of the ID.2all will be priced under €25,000.

      Volkswagen has released the initial official teaser for its forthcoming entry-level EV in Europe, the ID. One. Slated for release in 2027, it will have a starting price of €20,000 (approximately $20,800 at current conversion rates), filling the gap left by the discontinued VW Up!

      Thomas Schafer, the CEO of the German automaker, describes the vehicle as “an affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe,” highlighting the region's status as the "Champions League of automobile manufacturing." In another LinkedIn post, the VW chief mentioned that a concept version of the EV will be unveiled in March.

      While Volkswagen has not explicitly confirmed the name of the model, it had been referred to as the ID. 1 previously; however, the teaser image indicates it may be called ID.One. This model will be positioned below the anticipated production version of the ID.2all concept (potentially named ID. Two), which is expected to launch a year prior, in 2026, starting at under €25,000 ($26,000).

      The teaser showcases the vehicle's front and lighting design, which bears resemblance to the 2021 VW ID.Life concept. It is likely that the ID.One will be a five-door hatchback with a slightly elevated stance, giving it a crossover appearance.

      The headlights feature 3D LED graphics integrated into a black grille, accompanied by an illuminated VW emblem. Additional features include slim daytime running lights (DRLs) on the front bumper and sculpted fenders that suggest the presence of large alloy wheels. An infotainment display can also be seen mounted on the dashboard.

      The ID. One will utilize a shorter version of the MEB platform, which it shares with the somewhat larger ID.2all. Its compact size may allow it to support a smaller, more cost-effective battery pack, likely coupled with a single electric motor. Beyond Volkswagen, these same components might also be utilized for similar entry-level EVs by Skoda and Seat, potentially sharing various elements with the ID. One to lower production expenses.

      More Models Are Coming, Including Golf And T-Roc EVs

      Despite recently moving Golf production to Mexico, Thomas Schafer confirmed that the Wolfsburg plant in Germany will continue to serve as the "heart of the Volkswagen brand in the electric age." This factory will be responsible for manufacturing the next generations of the Golf and T-Roc high-volume EVs. These models will be constructed on the new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which will employ a “totally new production process.”

      In what has been described as the “largest future-oriented initiative in Volkswagen’s history,” the company has promised to launch nine new models in Europe by 2027, selectively expanding its product range. VW aims to become a “technologically leading volume manufacturer” globally by 2030 while “optimizing cost structures.”
