HEMI V8 Might Make a Comeback in the 2026 Dodge Durango | Carscoops
Changes in the automotive sector may prolong the iconic Hemi V8's production for at least another year.
Reports indicate that the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is set to power the 2026 Dodge Durango R/T variant. An all-new generation of this SUV is anticipated to debut in the 2027 model year.
One thing is abundantly clear about Dodge: its fans are incredibly devoted to the Hemi V8. Since the previous-generation Charger and Challenger were phased out, enthusiasts have been eagerly hoping for its revival. A recent report suggests that the engine might still be in the game, potentially continuing through at least the 2026 model year.
This wouldn't be surprising considering that Ram, Jeep, and Dodge are currently offering the engine in a limited range of models. Ram utilizes it in some heavy-duty pickups, Jeep features it in the Wrangler Rubicon 392, and Dodge still uses it in the Durango. Notably, it appears that the Durango will be where the Hemi remains for 2026.
According to Mopar Insiders and an inside source, the 2026 Dodge Durango is expected to include at least one Hemi V8 trim, the R/T. While it was anticipated that the V6 trims would persist, this is the first indication of the V8 remaining for 2026. Additionally, Dodge previously surprised fans by confirming that the Durango Hellcat would continue into 2025, making the extension of Hemi production for what seems to be the last year of the current Durango generation a logical move.
It's understandable why Dodge may wish to maintain the Hemi's presence a bit longer. The Hornet hasn't performed as well as anticipated, the new Charger Daytona hasn't received particularly favorable reviews, and the gas-powered Charger is unavailable. The Challenger is officially out of production, and consumers are also waiting for a four-door version of the Charger.
Carscoops reached out to Stellantis for verification of this rumor, but there has been no official comment yet. Should the situation change, we will provide an update.
In the meantime, what are your thoughts? Should Dodge continue to support the Hemi for as long as possible—even in models like the Durango, which has been around since 2010 and is long overdue for an update? Should the brand move on from the V8 altogether? Or could there be a compromise where Dodge enhances the engine for improved performance and fuel efficiency?
