If you've noticed an increase in Honda Passports while out and about in the last year, it’s not by chance. Specifically, if you've seen more of the TrailSport models, there’s a good reason for that. 2025 has marked a record year for Passport sales, with the TrailSport variant making up 80% of all sales.
This trend indicates that Honda’s shift towards off-road vehicles is resonating well in the market. The Passport is positioned between the CR-V and Pilot in terms of size and cargo capacity, yet targets a different demographic—the type of consumer inclined to compare Honda's SUVs against options like the Toyota 4Runner or Ford Bronco. Last year, Honda sold 55,231 Passports, reflecting a 70% increase from the 32,527 units sold in 2024.
Such performance not only benefits Honda financially in the short term but also reveals a potential area for growth, highlighting a market that is still open and responding positively. While 55,000 units is merely a fraction compared to the CR-V's substantial sales, as the CR-V has sold over seven times that amount in the past two years, it is experiencing stagnation, demonstrating that the CR-V's widespread presence means its growth will likely be minimal from this point on.
In contrast, the Passport has yet to reach its limits. Meanwhile, the Pilot experienced a decrease of 12% last year, bringing its total to 124,209 vehicles.
Honda is certain to work on maintaining this momentum, and as Honda America President and CEO Kazuhiro Takizawa stated, they aim to “expand the TrailSport trim further.” Last year, they showcased a more aggressive Passport HRC concept at SEMA, featuring an integrated winch, enhanced lifting, and extended skid plates. Additionally, they crafted a highly specialized version of the Pilot TrailSport for staff to experience off-roading, as it’s vital for the company to understand what attracts Jeep customers if they plan to compete for their attention.
