The Ranger has achieved what no other Ford has accomplished in Australia over the past 37 years | Carscoops
Pickup trucks continue to dominate the Australian market, but the introduction of new models from Toyota and the impressive growth of BYD could potentially challenge the Ranger's dominance this year.
Recently, the Ford Ranger topped the sales charts in Australia for the third consecutive year.
Toyota's new RAV4 and Hilux are set to rival the Ranger's position.
Other notable performers included the Isuzu D-Max, Ford Everest, and Toyota Prado.
Looking back fifteen years, the best-selling cars in Australia were quite different. Sedans such as the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, Toyota Corolla, and Toyota Camry were the top sellers. Today, that landscape has shifted dramatically, with pickups and SUVs now leading the sales rankings.
According to Drive, last year, the Ford Ranger was the most sold vehicle in Australia, with 56,555 units sold, marking its third consecutive year at the top. This achievement places the Ranger alongside rare company, making it the first Ford to lead annual sales charts for three years in a row in 37 years. It has now surpassed the total sales of the iconic Falcon for the 21st century, joining a select group of Ford models to have dominated the market for three or more years.
Close behind were two well-known Toyota models, the RAV4 with 51,947 sales and the Hilux with 51,297. While these figures are strong, they reflect a decline from the previous year, with decreases of 11.5 percent and 4.1 percent respectively. Toyota is anticipating a rebound with the upcoming next-generation RAV4 and Hilux, hoping to regain market share from Ford.
The fourth best-selling vehicle in the country was the Isuzu D-Max, another pickup, with 26,839 units sold, down 11.1 percent compared to 2024. Other popular models included the Ford Everest (26,161), the Toyota Prado (26,106), Hyundai Kona (22,769), Mazda CX-5 (22,742), Mitsubishi Outlander (22,459), and the Tesla Model Y, which sold 22,239 units.

Despite many of Australia’s popular new vehicles seeing a drop in sales last year, the total new vehicle sales reached a record 1.241 million, representing a 0.3 percent increase over the previous year. This growth was largely fueled by an influx of new models from China, many of which are electric.
The Rise of Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicle sales, in particular, continued to climb. Australians purchased 103,270 electric vehicles in 2025, marking a 13.1 percent increase from the previous year.
No brand experienced growth like BYD, which sold 52,415 vehicles last year, an astonishing increase of 156.2 percent, positioning it just behind fellow Chinese brand GWM, which sold 52,809 units. This puts BYD in a strong position to become the leading Chinese brand in Australia. In contrast, MG struggled with an 18.4 percent decline, selling 41,298 units.
There was also a significant rise in demand for hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Traditional hybrid vehicle sales grew by 15.3 percent to 199,133 units, while plug-in hybrids surged by 130.9 percent, reaching 53,484 units sold.
