Nissan Sold Almost Twice the Number of Zs Compared to Supras | Carscoops
In 2025, Nissan's Z outperformed the Supra, as evolving electric vehicle demand and significant changes in sedan sales characterized a year of contrasts for the company.
Nissan reported sales of 5,487 Z models in 2025, marking a significant 73.4 percent increase from the previous year.
In contrast, Titan sales plummeted by 86.1 percent, totaling just 2,043 units in 2025.
Overall, the company saw a slight increase of 0.9 percent in total sales, reaching 873,307 vehicles.
While both the Nissan Z and Toyota Supra are powerful rear-wheel drive sports cars, they provide distinct driving experiences. However, in terms of popularity in the U.S. market, one model stood out in 2025.
Nissan's sales of the Z in the past year totaled 5,487 units, reflecting a substantial 73.4 percent rise from the 3,164 sold in 2024. This was an impressive achievement, despite the fact that the final quarter of the year didn't sustain the momentum established earlier on.
In the fourth quarter, Nissan sold 665 Zs in the U.S., down 32.8 percent from the 989 units sold in the same quarter the previous year. This decline was more pronounced when compared to the 2,154 units sold in the first quarter of 2025, which had set a strong precedent.
When compared to the Toyota Supra, the Z continues to enjoy robust sales. Toyota managed to sell 2,953 Supras in the past year, a 13.3 percent increase from the 2,615 units sold in the previous year. In December alone, sales reached 277 units, showing a remarkable 280.5 percent increase compared to the 70 units sold in December 2024.
It's not entirely surprising that the Z has the edge in sales; the Supra is approaching the end of its production run, and the Nissan is priced significantly lower. With a starting price of $42,970, the Z is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 400 horsepower, compared to the Supra's standard 3.0-liter single-turbo inline-six, which delivers a maximum of 382 hp. The base price for the Supra starts at $57,500, creating a substantial price difference for buyers considering both options.
A manual version of the Z Nismo is on the way, which could maintain high demand for the Z throughout 2026. Nissan has confirmed its development, catering to enthusiasts.
Overall, despite variations in performance across models, Nissan's total sales in the U.S. rose slightly in 2025, finishing at 873,307 units—an increase of 0.9 percent from 2024's 865,938 units. However, this figure conceals considerable disparities among the various models, with some experiencing remarkable increases while others saw significant declines.
One of the standout models was the Murano, which saw its sales more than double to 42,747 units, up from 19,316 the previous year. The Pathfinder also recorded a strong rise of 25.6 percent, reaching 101,598 units sold. The subcompact Kicks crossover improved significantly with a 33.9 percent increase, making it one of Nissan’s strongest performers for the year. The Armada achieved a more modest but still commendable increase of 14.4 percent.
Conversely, not all models experienced favorable outcomes. The once-popular Altima sedan saw a decrease of 18.1 percent, totaling 93,268 units. The Titan experienced one of the steepest drops in its category, down 86.1 percent to just 2,043 sold. The Rogue also experienced a decline, falling 11.3 percent to 217,896 units, though it retained the title of Nissan's best-selling model in the U.S.
Nissan's electric vehicle sales were also adversely affected. The conclusion of the federal tax credit in September led to a 50 percent drop in Leaf sales, totaling 5,149 units. The Ariya's sales decreased by 24.7 percent as it approached its final full year before being discontinued in 2026.
