Hyundai Advises to Continue Driving Your Tucson, But Suggests Parking It Away from Other Vehicles | Carscoops
A small wiring issue with the Tucson has prompted Hyundai to announce a recall of 52,000 vehicles.
Hyundai is recalling Tucson SUVs equipped with the trailer hitch option due to a defective trailer harness that may short-circuit and pose a fire risk. Additionally, DIY harness kits sold by dealers are also included in the recall.
In December, temperatures in Tucson, Arizona, can reach a comfortable 64°F (18°C), but 51,587 Tucson SUVs may be at risk of experiencing excessive heat due to a wiring harness issue in models manufactured for the 2022 to 2024 model years with the optional towing package.
The issue lies with the harness's attachment point on the vehicle, which is prone to water ingress. If water enters the wire harness control module, it could lead to a short circuit.
One consequence could be malfunctioning trailer lights or vehicle brake lights, potentially leading to accidents if the following driver doesn’t recognize that the Tucson is stopping. However, a more serious risk is the possibility of a fire in the harness due to the short circuit.
Hyundai advises owners to park their SUVs away from buildings until the recall repairs are completed, which are expected to be rectified by the second half of February 2026 at the earliest, even though they can continue driving their vehicles in the meantime.
Furthermore, it’s not only the Tucson owners with factory-installed trailer harnesses who need to be cautious. Hyundai had also sold 1,338 harnesses over the counter at U.S. dealerships for DIY installations, and those vehicle owners will also need their SUVs inspected.
This presents a greater challenge for Hyundai, as it may be more complicated to identify which vehicles received the modification if it was done outside of the dealership.
This recall is part of an ongoing series of wiring problems reported from Hyundai. In October, the company recalled 136,000 Santa Fe vehicles due to an improperly secured starter motor harness boot cover over the starter's “B+” terminal. Furthermore, last month, 143,000 units of the square-shaped 2024-2025 SUVs faced a recall due to malfunctioning reversing cameras.
