A Japanese company has unveiled a solution for foggy side mirrors in the rain.
This product employs natural science to keep mirrors clear during storms.
Details on pricing and release dates for the U.S. market are still unconfirmed.
Thanks to a lesser-known Japanese supplier, a common nuisance during rain may finally have a practical solution. Car Mate, a brand that might not be widely recognized, is launching an inventive water-repellent film designed to keep side mirrors clear in wet conditions.
The product is set to debut in the U.S. at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, providing drivers with a straightforward yet effective method to enhance visibility when it rains.
The Zero Wiper Film-Type Side Mirror was first introduced at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023 and subsequently launched in Japan the following year. The concept is quite simple: the film adheres directly to the mirror’s surface, creating a barrier that repels water effortlessly.
Early demonstrations indicate that water droplets slide away easily, ensuring a clear view of what is behind the vehicle.
How Does It Work?
According to Car Mate, the film features a microscopic texture inspired by the lotus leaf, a natural model of extreme water repellency. This structure causes water to bead up and roll off instead of adhering to the glass. The result is enhanced visibility in rainy conditions, particularly while the vehicle is in motion.
Crucially, since the film is not designed specifically for one type of vehicle, it can be used with most modern side mirrors. However, there is a tradeoff; the film does not custom-fit the mirror’s shape, leaving the outer edge exposed, which may present a slight aesthetic concern for some users.
Hydrophobic mirror films are not a new concept in the U.S. Market, as various options are available through retailers like Amazon and Walmart. Additionally, spray-on solutions such as RainX can be applied to side mirrors to help them repel water effectively.
Car Mate emphasizes the durability and ease of use of its film, claiming it can last up to six months before requiring replacement, providing a longer-lasting solution with minimal maintenance.
Details regarding U.S. pricing and availability remain unconfirmed, but for drivers frequently contending with wet conditions, this product could offer a small yet significant enhancement for daily driving.
