This might not be the exact chassis that has reappeared, but it is indeed a Probe IV from Ford.

Interesting finds can often be discovered on Facebook Marketplace. Recently, via Ford Authority, a 1983 Ford Probe IV concept car came to light, believed to be one of two that were produced. The other chassis is currently housed at the Petersen Museum, while this one was recently rediscovered, according to the listing, leading the owner to invite offers without specifying a price.

Ford first unveiled the Probe concept in 1979. Designed by Ghia, it featured a wedge shape built on Ford’s Fox platform. The innovative goal was to give an economy car supercar-like proportions to minimize air resistance and enhance fuel efficiency. This was followed by the Probe II and III concepts, with the design of Probe III significantly influencing the Ford Sierra/Merkur XR4Ti. Sadly, the only remaining Probe I was lost to a fire in 2024.

By the time Ford developed the Probe IV, Ghia managed to reduce its drag coefficient to .15—a remarkably low number that surpasses modern passenger vehicles, proudly showcased with a decal on the rear deck. Naturally, the Probe IV had the advantage, designed solely for aerodynamics without safety or production constraints. It also lacked a powertrain and steering, rendering this concept more of an artistic piece than a functional car.

But what an impressive artwork it is. The Probe V, released in 1985, was even more avant-garde, resembling a hovercraft gliding over the road, and I’ve always thought the eventual production version of the Probe deserved more appreciation for its design. However, the Probe IV stands out as the most aesthetically pleasing of them all.

I have a fondness for triangular headlights on a long, sloping hood, and the extended side windows beyond the belt line are quite striking. It reminds me of BMW’s recent Neue Klasse concepts or the original design for the Chevy Volt, and I’ve always hoped someone could find a way to bring such a feature to production while ensuring passenger safety. The taillights, partially hidden by bodywork strakes, add a nice touch of '80s flair as well.

With no engine, this Probe IV is mounted on a wooden frame with steel subframes at the front and rear. Given its age, the seller notes several missing parts and imperfections, including a missing wheel cover, side mirrors, and a damaged rear glass area that will need repair.

Hopefully, someone will come forward to restore it at a reasonable price. This Probe series initiated what I deem a significant era of inspiring concepts from Ford, for those who remember when Ford was more than just pickup trucks. It deserves to be preserved, even more so because the brand has since evolved.
