A New Hyundai Ioniq Is Coming, But It Won't Be Available in the US | Carscoops
Hyundai's smallest Ioniq EV features familiar design, innovative technology, and a strong range, but it will not be available in the U.S. despite plans for a global launch.
Hyundai's compact Ioniq premieres with a practical five-door configuration.
The all-electric models may offer a range of up to 400 miles.
The design is inspired by the coupe-like Concept Three.
While electric vehicle sales may be slowing down in the U.S. due to reduced government incentives, Hyundai continues to push forward. The new Ioniq 3, a compact EV following the Inster, is set to enter the market. This five-door hatchback is smaller and less expensive than the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.
The Ioniq 3, introduced through the recent Concept Three, aims to be one of Hyundai's key global EVs, providing affordability and practicality. Camouflaged prototypes have already been seen testing, suggesting an official launch may be imminent. Here’s what we currently know.
A Balanced Design
Unlike its larger counterparts, the Ioniq 3 has a more universally appealing design. Prototypes showcase a coupe-like profile similar to the Concept Three, although the front design features more standard battery-cooling intakes and slim pixel daytime running lights separated from the main headlights.
In profile view, it replaces the concept's narrow-frame windows with larger clamshell ones (a nod to 90s aesthetics). Overall, the look is clean and simple, featuring smooth surfaces and intersecting lines based on Hyundai's 'Art of Steel' design philosophy.
The rear includes a high-mounted full-width tail light cluster with LED pixel elements and a split-glass hatch, resembling the Toyota Prius. Some concept features, like translucent aero elements and an elaborate lower diffuser, will not be included, although it still has a discreet spoiler.
A Tech-Enhanced Interior
The interior marks a significant shift from Hyundai’s current offerings, featuring a completely new layout with a distinct digital instrument cluster and a sizable Tesla-style infotainment screen.
The infotainment system utilizes Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect platform, which operates on Android Automotive OS, enabling cloud-based user profiles that allow for on-demand feature downloads and conversational voice commands for navigation and other functions.
Notably, spy shots confirm physical buttons for HVAC controls residing below the infotainment display. The five-seat interior maintains the minimalist design found in other Ioniq models, complete with simplistic door panels and oval accents.
Additional features include Apple CarPlay Ultra compatibility, ambient lighting, and enhanced Level 2 driver assistance systems.
Platform, Powertrain, and Battery
While full specifications are not yet available, the Ioniq 3 will be built on a simplified version of the E-GMP platform. Instead of the 800-volt architecture in the Ioniq 5 and 6, this model will utilize a 400-volt system to help manage costs.
It shares many components with the anticipated Kia EV4, and a single-motor, front-wheel-drive setup is expected at launch, offering 201 hp (150 kW). A dual-motor version may be introduced later in a potential performance-oriented N trim.
There are reportedly two lithium-ion NCM battery options being considered: one with 58 kWh and another with 81.4 kWh, with the larger battery expected to provide a range of about 390-400 miles (628–644 km). Both configurations will support V2G (vehicle-to-grid) and V2L (vehicle-to-load) capabilities.
Competitors and Launch Timeline
Key competitors for the Ioniq 3 include Kia's EV3 and EV4 (essentially variations of the Ioniq 3), Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born, Peugeot e-308, Mini Aceman Electric, MG4, BYD Dolphin, and Skoda Enyaq.
With minimal camouflage and essential interior technology already disclosed, we anticipate a full reveal within the next six months and global availability by 2027. As for North American availability, it will not be offered in the U.S. since it will be manufactured in Turkey.
