JLR Refutes Claims of Gerry McGovern's Dismissal, Yet Remains Silent on His Employment Status | Carscoops
A dramatic story suggested that the design chief responsible for modern Range Rovers was escorted from headquarters, but JLR now asserts that he was not fired.
Recent reports alleged that McGovern was removed from HQ in December.
JLR has categorically denied that it terminated its design leader's employment and labeled the reports as false.
The company has yet to clarify whether McGovern is still with them.
The rumor mill at Jaguar Land Rover has been particularly active this month, reminiscent of a Defender on a Camel Trophy expedition. Initial reports claimed that chief creative officer Gerry McGovern had been escorted from the premises and his contract was terminated. Now, JLR has intervened to refute these claims.
According to the latest information, JLR has denied the allegations, stating that McGovern's employment has not been terminated, though they have not confirmed whether he is still employed.
The company opted not to provide further comments on what it describes as speculative stories, which will undoubtedly leave fans wishing for a clear explanation regarding the status of their influential design chief.
And calling him influential is certainly justified. Throughout his twenty years with the company, McGovern has played a pivotal role in shaping nearly every significant modern Land Rover and Range Rover model, including the original Evoque, the innovative Velar, the current Range Rover lineup, and the revived Defender.
Regardless of opinions on the contentious Jaguar Type 00 concept or the brand’s recent overhaul, it is undeniable that he has guided JLR design through a time of considerable technical and cultural transformation.
So how did we arrive at this point? One reason the 'fired' rumor gained traction is the timing of McGovern’s alleged departure, which came just days after longtime CEO Adrian Mardell's retirement, with PB Balaji stepping in as his successor.
Balaji previously oversaw finance operations at Tata Motors before assuming his role at JLR, leading to speculation that he might seek to initiate his tenure with a significant reshuffle.
Combined with the criticism online surrounding Jaguar’s new design, the situation appeared to align. However, this impression is inaccurate, at least according to the company’s PR representatives.
“It is untrue we have terminated Gerry McGovern’s employment and we do not intend to further comment on speculative stories,” a JLR spokesperson stated to Motor1.
That, however, does not confirm that he remains in his position. Has he resigned? His profile is still visible on the “JLR people” page of the company’s website, indicating that he is likely still part of the team.
For the time being, we assume McGovern is still in his role and continues to oversee design at Jaguar Land Rover as the company gears up for a new lineup of electric models and the next phase of its brand transformation.
We have reached out to JLR for comments regarding the reports and to verify whether McGovern is still the creative head of the company, and will update this article once we receive a response.
