BMW Has Created Fan-Picked Specials, but They Won't Be Available Here | Carscoops
Limited-edition fan-voted sports cars are being produced exclusively for one country, leaving buyers from other regions disappointed.
BMW has invited fans in South Korea to vote on custom M editions, which will only be available there.
One standout model is a special M5 in Fire Orange, which includes carbon brakes and additional upgrades. Additionally, there are plans for ten M2s in Voodoo Blue and five in Frozen Portimao Blue.
The German automaker is set to create a small number of special edition M5, M2, X5, and X3 vehicles based on designs from a fan contest, but buyers in the U.S. will miss out. All these limited-release models will be sold exclusively in South Korea, where the contest was held.
Earlier this year, BMW kicked off a “Create Your Own BMW Edition” contest, allowing fans to select their favorite from five proposed designs.
Among the options was a striking M5 in Fire Orange, a color that resonated with voters. The response was so positive that BMW decided to produce five units, each starting at about $127,000.
This vibrant orange hue is familiar to M fans, having previously appeared on the M3 GTS and the U.S.-specific M3 Lime Rock Park Edition, lending it considerable legacy from the M Division.
The South Korean M5s will be well-equipped, boasting features such as a premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system, carbon ceramic brakes, the M Driver’s Package, and Kyalami Orange interior accents to match the exterior.
Additionally, South Korean fans successfully urged BMW to produce two tailored M2 Coupes. One will be finished in Voodoo Blue, while the other will showcase Frozen Portimao Blue. BMW intends to manufacture only five units of the Frozen Portimao Blue M2 and ten of the Voodoo Blue.
Both models will come with performance enhancements, including staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, an M carbon fiber front lip spoiler, and M carbon mirror caps. Interior upgrades will feature M carbon bucket seats, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, and extensive carbon fiber trim.
The starting price for the Frozen Portimao Blue version is approximately $70,500, while the Voodoo Blue, due to its standard metallic finish, is priced slightly lower at $69,300.
The remaining winners from the contest are less extravagant. One is an X5 xDrive40i M Sport in Dravit Grey, and the other an X3 20 xDrive in Dune Grey, with minimal visual enhancements apart from the paint. BMW will limit production of each SUV to just 30 units.
