GWM's Ora 5 has been seen testing in Europe.
The crossover is marginally larger than the EV3.
It features a single front-mounted electric motor that generates 201 hp.
The new Ora 5 has been spotted in the wild, camouflaged, but it wasn’t seen in China. The electric crossover was caught undergoing tests on European roads, indicating that Great Wall Motor is gearing up to introduce its first SUV outside its home country.
This is the same Ora that stirred things up for Volkswagen a few years back with the Punk Cat, a vehicle resembling a blend of the classic and modern Beetle. This time, the design takes a different direction, yet it may still remind you of certain Porsche models, particularly the Macan and 911.
If the shape under the disguise seems somewhat familiar, it's because the Ora 5 borrows many design elements from the smaller Ora 3, which used to be known as the Funky Cat in Europe and is called Good Cat in China and GWM Ora in Australia.
Think of an Ora 3 enhanced with a protein shake diet and roof rails, and you'll grasp the Ora 5's appearance.
The rounded lighting signatures remain intact, as does the smooth surface that has become a hallmark of Ora vehicles. Even though it's wrapped up, the car presents a more approachable look than most compact SUVs, which is precisely what Ora aims for—adorable yet practical, rather than fierce and aggressive.
Already Unveiled in China
There’s no need to strain to decipher the final design, as Ora has already unveiled the 5 in Asia. We’ve included images of that at the end of the article for a clearer idea of what to expect when sales commence in Europe in 2026.
Tough competition
From prior static launches, we also know that the 5 measures just under 4,500 mm (177 inches) in length and has a wheelbase of 2,720 mm (107.1 inches), placing it right in the midst of Europe’s most competitive electric vehicle segment.
As a result, it will face tough competition from vehicles such as the BYD Atto 3, Peugeot e-2008, and Kia EV3 upon its arrival.
Under the hood, the Ora 5 is equipped with a single electric motor producing 201 hp (204 PS / 150 kW) paired with an LFP battery. While the capacity hasn’t been officially confirmed, Car News China suggests the likely options are 63.87 kWh and 83.49 kWh, as those are offered in the mechanically similar Lightning Cat sedan.
Screen-Heavy Interior
The interior heavily resembles that of the updated Good Cat/Ora 3, featuring a large, floating infotainment screen running GWM’s Coffee OS, which integrates some climate controls into the display.
However, there are a few physical toggles lower on the console for essential controls, along with a two-spoke steering wheel, a 10-inch digital cluster, wireless phone charging, and ambient lighting to enhance the cabin's features. For Europe, the timing is ideal. Ora has ventured into various markets with mixed results and is in dire need of a model that meets current preferences. A compact electric crossover like this could significantly bolster Ora’s presence.
