As the seasons shift, we in the Northeast are stowing away classic cars, lawn mowers, and various warm-weather powersports equipment. This means many batteries will be connected to tenders. And lo and behold, Amazon is already rolling out Cyber Monday discounts on vehicle battery chargers and maintainers from NOCO, Battery Tender, CTEK, Craftsman, and Schumacher Electric.
You can’t go wrong with any of the brands mentioned below. However, if you’re uncertain about which battery tender to choose, I’ll provide a brief guide on how to select a product.
First, determine how many batteries you want to charge. Some tenders can maintain multiple batteries, but others prefer using individual, smaller tenders for each vehicle. It’s largely a matter of personal preference. Personally, I keep batteries in vehicles and use separate tenders. However, if you remove the batteries and store them together in one spot, a multi-output charger might be the better option.
Next, verify the type (material) of battery you have. Most tenders will feature modes for lithium, AGM, and lead-acid batteries, but ensure that the battery tender you choose aligns with the batteries you intend to charge. This information is likely printed directly on the battery. If not, you can search the brand and model online for the details.
Check whether your batteries are 6V, 12V, or 24V. Standard vehicles will almost always be 12V, but lawn mowers and similar equipment may use 6V, while larger trucks or agricultural equipment could operate on 24V.
The number of amps you'll require depends on the size of your batteries and how deeply discharged you want to revive them from. To put it differently, charging at 5 amps or less is quite slow. If you have a large battery that is nearly dead, a 3-amp trickle charger (one of the most commonly used small sizes) won’t be very effective. However, if you’re dealing with a motorcycle battery, or your car battery is new and you simply plan to keep it in maintenance mode for a few months, 3 amps should be sufficient. Some models offer multiple charging speed options, which is ideal because it allows you to maintain a healthy battery or boost a weak one.
If you’re seeking a set-and-forget solution for maintaining good batteries, with a solid range of features and built-in safety, I recommend the Battery Tender 3-amp model with modes for lithium and AGM/standard batteries, priced at $60. That said, I also find the deeply discounted (just $33) Craftsman 15A charger and starter appealing because it can keep a battery charged and revive a dead one. Additionally, the controls seem very user-friendly, which I value.
