The Priciest New Car Ever Auctioned Wasn't A Bugatti Or Ferrari, It Was This | Carscoops
A rare hypercar has made headlines by setting a new record as the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.
Reported 10 hours ago by Brad Anderson, the remarkable auction price reached $20.63 million in Las Vegas during the Formula One weekend, highlighting that despite a market filled with exclusivity, rarity still prevails.
This sale raises questions about whether Murray regrets limiting production to just five units.
After its world debut at Monterey Car Week in August, Gordon Murray Automotive confirmed that a single collector had purchased all five S1 LMs.
The identity of the collector and the reasons for selling one of these ultra-rare vehicles remain unclear. What is evident is that the car's appearance at RM Sotheby’s sparked intense bidding, resulting in a sale price that securely places the S1 LM in the record books.
Before the bidding commenced, the event had already captured attention. The S1 LM show car was delivered by helicopter, landing at the auction site in a display fit for such an extraordinary vehicle.
The winning bidder will not only own a hypercar crafted by one of the industry's most esteemed engineers but will also work alongside Gordon Murray to personalize every facet of their S1 LM. Additionally, they will participate in development drives alongside Dario Franchitti while the car undergoes testing by GMSV.
Gordon Murray’s T.50 has been recognized as a contemporary take on the McLaren F1, but the S1 is even more striking and adheres closely to the original F1 design while incorporating modern elements.
Similar to the T.50, the S1 LM features a naturally aspirated 4.3-liter Cosworth V12 engine specifically engineered for this model. It generates over 700 hp, revs up to 12,100 rpm, and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission that powers the rear wheels. Gordon Murray aims for a weight of just 2,150 lbs (957 kg).
