The 1960s Jeepster Commando was known for its friendly appearance, and now the name is returning on a more aggressive 392 V8-powered Wrangler, thanks to a collaboration with Fox Factory. This new model resembles an extreme concept from the Easter Jeep Safari and is marketed as a tribute to the military. Only 250 units will be produced, starting at $69,995 ($84,885 with the optional Whipple supercharger and MagnaFlow exhaust), with Fox stating that these will be sold only to "active military and veterans."
Fox also mentioned that one unit will be auctioned to the general public, with proceeds benefiting the USO.
At current market prices (a standard 2025 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 has a starting price of $100,590), this offering seems to be quite a deal. Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf previously indicated that “...every single Jeep that we make has been repriced except for the Wrangler, which will be addressed in the 26 model year imminent,” during a reveal event for the Compass a few months ago. Therefore, it seems reasonable to expect that pricing for V8 Wranglers will align more closely with this model in the upcoming model year.
Meanwhile, the AI-generated promotional video for this vehicle is humorously cheesy, yet I must say the Commando has a striking appearance. Features like tube doors, 37-inch tires, a slim front bumper, external reservoir shocks, and an attractive bimini top contribute to its impressive modified Jeep look. However, owners may encounter difficulty lifting the hefty spare tire, which could weigh at least 100 pounds (remember to lift with your legs!).
The Commando is not an official Jeep trim but rather a product from Fox Factory, which specializes in building modification packages like this one and selling them through dealerships. This approach offers a unique, yet warranty-compliant and dealer-serviceable vehicle for those who enjoy aftermarket modifications without the need to customize their setup personally. Fox Factory provides packages for various vehicles, from UTVs to street trucks.
The Jeep Commando will be available at Jeep dealerships and includes a three-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, alongside a five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Expect to see more collaborations like this in the future. As manufacturers aim to reduce costs, outsourcing limited edition variants to aftermarket companies is increasingly logical. Additionally, such collaborations can help in sidestepping regulatory challenges like corporate pollution standards.
