It appears that the Honda Passport HRC Concept showcased at SEMA this week might transition from concept to reality.
Last week in Japan, Kazuhiro Takizawa, President and CEO of Honda America, told The Drive that the concept “is not just for SEMA.” He added, “we’re looking to further expand the TrailSport trim.”
Takizawa pointed out how the Type R enhances Honda’s sporty image on the road; the company is now focused on improving its off-road image and capabilities. It began with the Pilot, then the Passport, and now the CR-V. “We aim to further implement this TrailSport trim across more models.”
The TrailSport trim is more than just cosmetic changes. Takizawa mentioned that Honda is enhancing these models with increased ground clearance and improved suspension.
The HRC Concept Passport takes it a step further with features like an integrated front bumper-mounted winch, aluminum skid plates to protect the center bearing, prop shaft, and rear drive unit, upgraded dampers, a swing-out rear tire carrier, a distinct exhaust, and around a 2.4-inch lift, which is significant.
Takizawa’s remarks align with this direction. The Passport TrailSport debuted as a strong competitor to Subaru, presents a rugged appearance, and is essentially a Toyota 4Runner for everyday consumers.
Honda has even created an extreme one-off Pilot TrailSport that’s ready for off-roading, just to demonstrate to employees how to navigate trails.
How far Honda will take the TrailSport nameplate remains to be seen, but a winch and a 2.4-inch factory-supported lift kit could become available options for the Passport TrailSport.
Honda provided The Drive with travel, accommodations, and access to engineers for the purpose of writing this article.
