BMW is set to expand its Neue Klasse with a new i1 electric hatch.
The rendering depicts the i1 with a sporty shooting brake design.
Strong market demand in Europe supports the continuity of BMW’s compact lineup.
BMW’s upcoming generation of models is rolling out quickly, and the brand is eager to introduce the Neue Klasse concept across its offerings. Starting with the iX3, the lineup will soon include the fully electric i3 sedan and soon after, the iX4 Coupe SUV, which we reported on earlier today.
The 1-Series hatchback is also gearing up for a new phase, potentially offering both combustion engines and electric options. The electric variant, likely to be named the i1, may look like the renderings presented here.

This design, created by digital artist Sugar Design, envisions the i1 hatch blending features from the Neue Klasse concepts with design elements from the second-generation iX3. The front showcases BMW’s latest take on the kidney grille.
In contrast to the iX3, this rendition of the i1 adopts the elongated grille design highlighted in the Neue Klasse sedan concept, unifying the lighting elements into a single visual feature.

However, it’s the overall silhouette of the i1 that truly excites us. With an elongated roof and a sharply slanted rear window, it embodies the Shooting Brake style that many automotive enthusiasts appreciate, all while maintaining a more compact hatch profile.
While a less upright rear window may affect cargo space, who cares if it looks this good?
The Upcoming 1-Series
Earlier this year, Bern Koerber, the senior vice president of BMW Brand and Product Management, emphasized the significance of the combustion-powered 1-Series, ensuring its continuation. The current ICE model is vital in markets like Greece, Spain, and Italy, providing an attractive entry point into the BMW brand.
Details regarding the next-generation 1-Series remain sparse, but it is anticipated to share much of its platform with other Neue Klasse models. It may also utilize components from the wider BMW Group, particularly from Mini.
