Dodge's 1,000-HP Hellephant Crate Engine Makes a Comeback for Hemi Everything

      Recently, it was announced that Mopar Direct Connection is bringing back the Hemi Drag Pak for enthusiasts in the aftermarket scene. In addition, they revealed the comeback of the Hellephant crate engine. With some creative vision and possibly some crafting skills, the supercharged V8, producing 1,000 horsepower, will allow you to turn any vehicle into a Hellcat and more.

      In addition to its impressive horsepower, the engine generates 950 pound-feet of torque. While those figures might not reach Demon 170 levels, achieving four-digit horsepower is still impressive. Mopar indicates that the new “A30” Hellephant features a Gen III aluminum engine block with six-bolt mains along with upgraded forged steel components (such as the crank and connecting rods). The 3.0-liter twin-screw supercharger has received enhancements (not detailed by Mopar), as has the belt tensioner. Clearly, no detail has been overlooked.

      “The demand for HEMI engine power is stronger than ever, and Direct Connection is prepared to deliver the horsepower enthusiasts desire with two newly upgraded crate HEMI engines,” stated Chad Seymour, head of crate engines at Direct Connection. “Direct Connection is accelerating our efforts. With the recent unveiling of the new Dodge Charger Hustle Stuff Drag Pak race car and the reintroduction of the Hellephant and Drag Pak crate engines, the Direct Connection lineup continues to grow and develop.”

      As before, Mopar provides “plug and play” engine kits (including wiring harnesses, etc.) to make it easy to install the Hellephant in any vehicle from pre-1976 or any designated race car with minimal hassle. The price for the Hellephant? $34,995—enough to purchase a Hornet, though this option is superior.

      The new Hellephant is now available for purchase through Mopar Direct Connection, with the first units set to ship later in November.
