The Rivian spinoff Also has introduced its inaugural e-bike, the revolutionary TM-B.
It features dual suspension, a mid-drive motor, and a robust design.
Details regarding sales and production are still uncertain, but there is significant interest.
It's well-known that Rivian has been exploring the e-bike market for a considerable time. Over the years, various patents and leaks have surfaced, but now we are finally seeing the outcome of that exploration with the unveiling of the TM-B today.
This model is the flagship offering from Also, a new brand created by Rivian. It presents an interesting e-bike option that may soon be available, provided the company can persuade consumers to invest in such an unconventional two-wheeler.
What Exactly Is It?
Also’s TM-B is not your typical bicycle or even an e-bike; it's more like a modular compact vehicle on two wheels. The design is based around a sturdy, weather-resistant block located at the bottom of the frame.
Within this block, you will find the battery, a small generator, and the pedal system. Importantly, the pedals do not directly power the rear wheel. Instead, the pedal movements generate power for the generator, and the pedal-by-wire drivetrain transmits that power to the rear wheel.
Also provides three different riding profiles and a customizable seat system. Customers start by selecting either a small or large seat. After this choice, they can opt for additional seating options, such as a cargo seat or a motorcycle-style bench seat.
They can also decide between an All-Terrain package featuring knobby tires and two additional driving modes or a Street package with smoother tires. The All-Terrain package comes at an additional cost of $200, though the only apparent hardware difference involves the Kenda mountain bike tires.
A five-inch touchscreen cockpit with a rotatable bezel allows users to access crucial ride information along with GPS navigation. The bike is equipped with full suspension offering 120mm of travel, but Also does not specify whether it can be locked out for climbing or flat terrain.
The braking system is particularly noteworthy as it incorporates regenerative technology to recharge the battery and features ABS. A unique auto-lock system enhances security by locking the rear wheel, battery, and frame when activated.
Also claims the bikes will provide a range of 60 to 100 miles (approximately 97 to 161 kilometers) and torque of up to 180 Nm (133 lb-ft). Higher-spec models have a maximum payload of 324 lbs (147 kilograms).
How Much Does It Cost?
The base TM-B will be priced at "under $4,000," while the Launch Edition, which is currently available for order, starts at $4,500 before additional options. This price point is fairly reasonable within this category. It is clearly targeted at those with a casual interest in two-wheeled transportation, while serious cyclists may find it somewhat insufficient.
It may not serve as a substitute for a traditional bicycle, and it may not resonate with every purist, but it does provide a refreshing reinterpretation of a transportation method that has been integral to daily life for over a century.
