      The 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ will introduce GM's eyes-off driving technology and advanced AI-powered computing.

      General Motors is set to provide eyes-off driving capabilities by 2028 with the Cadillac Escalade IQ, integrating Google’s Gemini AI starting next year, alongside enhanced performance from a unified computing core and over-the-air updates.

      The realm of autonomous driving is ever-evolving, and today GM announced that those who purchase the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ will have the ability to drive without needing to focus on the road. This announcement is part of their broader plans, which also encompass the Google Gemini integration and Vehicle-to-Grid power.

      Progressing Autonomy

      Eyes-off driving is a concept many manufacturers have discussed, but few have come close to realizing. Presently, GM offers vehicles equipped with Super Cruise, a Level 2 system that can manage acceleration, braking, and lane changes, but it can only operate on designated highways and requires constant driver attention. Nonetheless, Super Cruise serves as the groundwork for future eyes-off driving capabilities.

      To date, GM reports that Super Cruise has logged around five million miles with no accidents attributed to its use. The vehicle of the future promises not only to allow drivers to take their eyes off the road but also to utilize Google's AI assistant, Gemini, for various tasks, such as adjusting in-car settings and adapting to individual driver preferences. It functions like an enhanced memory button.

      Instead of merely recalling seat and mirror adjustments, it might reorganize media controls, modify display settings, and automatically provide navigation for frequent destinations, among other features.

      Set for launch next year, it will also offer guidance on one-pedal driving, oversee maintenance needs, and assist with tasks like meal location searches.

      Expanding Beyond Vehicles

      GM is looking beyond AI and autonomous driving, adopting elements from Tesla’s strategy by planning to introduce bidirectional EV charging, solar integration, and a home stationary battery.

      This means owners could potentially sell excess energy back to the grid and buy it again later when prices are lower.

      Although the growth of electric vehicles may be slowing, the surrounding technology is advancing, which is positive news for consumers.
