The next-generation GLS is still three to four years off, but if it resembles this, Mercedes might be on the right track.

Mercedes GLS renderings envision a design drawn from the Vision concept, featuring a prominent illuminated grille and streamlined proportions. The current model will see another facelift before a complete redesign is introduced in a few years.

Concept cars often venture too far into fantasy, appearing more like props from a sci-fi movie than vehicles suitable for real roads. However, Mercedes-Benz's new Vision Iconic concept manages to find a pleasing balance between modernity and nostalgia.

While there’s no confirmation that this concept will make it to production, it could have an impact on future models, such as a grand tourer version of the S-Class coupe.

One model that could substantially benefit from the aesthetic of concept cars is the GLS, which is beginning to feel dated.

Production of the GLS has been ongoing since 2019, with a facelift completed in 2023. It will see another refresh next year, although the modifications are expected to be minor.

These renderings from Sugar Design, who previously applied their creativity to the S-Class sedan, portray the GLS in a next-generation style that feels both familiar and updated. This is a design concept that Mercedes’ own designers should consider carefully.

      Modern Appearance

Similar to the Vision Iconic, this version of the GLS features a large illuminated LED front grille and compact headlights with star-shaped daytime running lights. It boasts more fluid lines than the current SUV, providing a softer appearance while still maintaining an air of luxury.

In its Maybach guise, it appears nearly perfect, adorned with a two-tone red and silver paint scheme that complements its imposing presence.

While the combination of sharp headlights, a large grille, and a lower bumper might remind some of the Mazda CX-90, it still presents well.

At the rear, the SUV is envisioned with sleek LED taillights, an illuminated Mercedes badge, and a chrome strip extending across the bumper.

As the current GLS is set to be updated for a second time soon, it appears we are at least three to four years away from an entirely new generation becoming available.

Though that might seem far off, if Mercedes can craft a flagship SUV that looks as impressive as this, we believe it will be worth the wait.
