A group of Jeep Wrangler 4xe owners was met with an unpleasant surprise at the start of the week when what appeared to be a routine over-the-air software update rendered many of their vehicles effectively unusable. One tipster, Erica, who reached out to us, reported that the update severely scrambled her 4xe's digital system, preventing her from driving beyond her immediate area without losing power:
"Over the weekend, Jeep issued an over-the-air update to the Wrangler 4xe models which contained a significant bug," Erica stated. "Those who received the update experienced power terrain issues where their vehicles wouldn't start or would lose all power while driving (my car lost power and shut off in the middle of the street five times within a two-block radius today in Aurora)."
"Jeep failed to notify its customers about this and created a serious safety risk that could have led to dangerous situations," said Erica. "My car had to be towed to the dealership, and despite acknowledging the bug, they have been giving me the runaround."
According to a post from "Jeep Cares" on 4xeforums.com (the company’s support team), the software update aimed to fix the vehicle's telematics system, and customers can safely delay it indefinitely instead of allowing it to install. However, a subsequent update has now been released that reportedly reverts the software to the earlier version, and Jeep Cares warned that customers will not be able to identify which version they currently have by checking Uconnect, as the problematic package doesn't alter the infotainment system, meaning the version numbers will look the same.
Discussions on forums and social media indicate that many owners are still without their vehicles, having needed to tow them to dealerships for resolution.
So, if you own a Wrangler 4xe, here’s what you should do for now:
If you have installed the problematic update and your vehicle is malfunctioning, try operating the car without the hybrid or electric-only drive modes activated. Once you receive a notification for a new update, accept it. This should revert the software to the earlier version.
If you haven’t installed the faulty update—or you’re uncertain but your vehicle is functioning properly—do nothing and postpone any software updates until further notice.
We have reached out to Jeep for further information and hope to get a response soon. Stay tuned.
