Subaru Hints at Two New STI Concepts, But Only One Seems Problematic | Carscoops
A pair of exciting new concepts are set to make their debut in Tokyo, indicating a shift in Subaru's performance approach.
Subaru will present an internal combustion engine hot hatch and an electric STI concept at the event.
These two models are concepts that may foreshadow future production vehicles.
The Trailseeker will join the Wilderness trims of both the Outback and Forester.
As the major automakers in Japan reveal their plans for the upcoming Tokyo motor show, now known as the Japan Mobility Show, Subaru is drawing attention with two STI-branded concepts: one fully electric and the other featuring a five-door hatchback design.
In this year's event, the automaker has divided its presentation into two clear themes, Performance and Adventure, all under the slogan “Driving the Subaru Difference.”
The STI Concepts
Headlining the lineup are the global premieres of the STI Performance-E and Performance-B concepts. The Performance-E is an all-electric model described as “leading Subaru's new generation,” suggesting it may develop into a future production car.
Subaru states that the Performance-E “merges exciting aesthetic proportions with exceptional aerodynamics and practicality.” Teaser images reveal sharp body lines, striking LED headlights, and large bumper air intakes, with a silhouette reminiscent of a hatchback or fastback.
Moreover, the electric concept promises a “driver-friendly configuration and a roomy, comfortable interior,” along with “various innovative technologies” aimed at providing “intuitive, exhilarating driving experiences.”
Subaru Performance Lineup
Hatchback With Tradition
The second introduction, the Performance-B STI concept, stays with internal combustion power. It is described as expanding Subaru's range of performance options, and although it was initially teased in June, we now have a clearer view.
The headlights and vented hood are identical to the current WRX sedan, but the redesigned body kit incorporates wider fender extensions and a different grille.
More significantly, it features a five-door hatchback profile topped by a large rear wing, and under the hood, it houses a boxer engine paired with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
While it remains unclear if Subaru intends to bring this hot hatch to market, such a model would evoke memories of the third-generation WRX STI from 2008 and might rival the Toyota GR Corolla in spirit and design.
Subaru Adventure Lineup
On the adventure front, Subaru will display prototypes of the fully electric Trailseeker (E-Outback) crossover, the new Forester Wilderness, and the latest Outback Wilderness.
All three will make their Japanese debut equipped with optional outdoor accessories. The Trailseeker features a roof box, the Forester carries two large canoes, and the Outback comes with a roof rack that includes a bike carrier.
Retro Meets Adventurous
Completing the show stand will be the Family Huckster, a reimagined 1983 Subaru GL Wagon enhanced with significant performance and aerodynamic upgrades.
Subaru will conduct its press conference at the Japan Mobility Show on October 29, where company president Atsushi Osaki is expected to deliver a keynote address.
