Yamaha’s Tricera prototype combines electric power with three-wheel steering.
The concept was first introduced in 2023 and is now closer to becoming a production model.
It is being showcased alongside Yamaha’s advanced Motoroid and Proto BEV concepts.
Yamaha has a reputation for producing some of the finest motorcycles globally, but its foray into the automotive sector has been limited and often overlooked. The brand has contributed to creating iconic engines for companies like Toyota, Lexus, Ford, and even Volvo.
This could change soon as the Japanese manufacturer gets ready to reveal something unexpected at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo: a three-wheeled trike reminiscent of a Morgan 3-Wheeler and a Polaris Slingshot.
**A New Approach to Three Wheels**
Named the Tricera, this project was first introduced three years ago with an eye-catching concept. The three-wheeler’s design has evolved since then and now appears much more practical for everyday road use.
However, it’s essential to temper expectations, as there is currently no confirmation that Yamaha will proceed with producing and selling it commercially.
The Tricera’s design features some elements similar to Yamaha’s current motorcycle lineup, such as its rounded headlights and two horizontal DRLs on the front. It also showcases a complex front end and small covers over the front wheels.
Additionally, Yamaha has included small wind deflectors at the front and compact wing mirrors, which were absent in the original concept. The interior is now far more practical for the road, featuring dark red bucket seats, a steering wheel, and gold paddle shifters.
The Tricera is powered by an electric motor, though specifics about its power output or battery size remain unclear. What is known is that Yamaha has developed a three-wheel steering system aimed at achieving "a whole new level of unity" between the vehicle and the driver.
The company has also integrated an adaptive sound device to alter the tone of the electric powertrain, adding an element of sensory interaction that is often missing in electric vehicles.
**More Concepts Coming Soon**
In addition to the Tricera, Yamaha plans to present various other innovations at the Tokyo show. These include the Motoroid, a two-wheeled concept that can bend and twist like something from a sci-fi movie, and the Proto BEV, an all-electric sports bike concept that suggests the future direction of Yamaha’s electric design language.
