The Neue Klasse design transitions from land to water with an e-SUP that features a motor and integrated remote control.
BMW has partnered with Sipaboards to create an electric stand-up paddleboard.
This board is equipped with a built-in 300-watt motor to assist in riding.
It provides up to 3.5 hours of battery-supported cruising on the water.
Currently, BMW is undergoing a significant transformation of its product lineup, preparing to introduce 40 new or extensively revamped models in the next two years. Despite this busy agenda, the German automaker has collaborated with a Slovenian electric stand-up paddleboard manufacturer, applying its Neue Klasse design language to a fresh form of mobility.
While it is likely that only a small percentage of BMW owners have any interest in stand-up paddleboarding, the company probably viewed its partnership with SipaBoards as a chance to broaden its design reach beyond traditional road vehicles.
Simply named the BMW x Sipaboards, the motorized paddleboard features a compact 300-watt electric motor along with a specially designed propeller. It can achieve speeds up to 4 knots, or approximately 7.5 km/h.
This motor serves a dual purpose: it propels the board forward, which is particularly beneficial when paddling against the wind or current, and it automatically inflates the board, eliminating the need for the usual pre-launch exertion.
The board measures 3.65 meters in length and 0.82 meters in width, weighing in at just 14.9 kg (32.8 lbs) with the motor, and it can accommodate two riders.
It appears that BMW Group Designworks incorporated elements of the Neue Klasse into the board's design. However, this does not mean it includes features like the newly-designed lights or distinctive kidney grilles. The Neue Klasse influence is primarily seen in the prominent X motif on the base of the board.
Each board is accompanied by a lightweight carbon fiber paddle that has a Bluetooth remote control integrated into it. This allows the rider to select various power levels, lighting effects, and haptic feedback. A smartphone app has also been created, featuring GPS tracking.
Pricing and Range
Initially, the board will be available exclusively with two 90 Wh battery modules, providing up to 3.5 hours of riding time. Next year, a version with two 180 Wh batteries will be introduced, enabling rides of up to seven hours.
The cost for this Neue Klasse-inspired paddleboard is set at €3,990 (about $4,633). As a BMW product, it comes with the associated luxury price tag, even as it shifts from the road to the water.
