Hyundai is slashing prices on its slow-selling electric sedan in Australia by up to AU$35,000 in order to clear inventory.

The starting price for the 2023 model year Ioniq 6 has been reduced to AU$49,990 from AU$77,554. This year, only 93 units of the Ioniq 6 have been sold in Australia, a significant decline from previous years.

If you've been curious about what a substantial price reduction looks like, this could be it. Hyundai has drastically lowered prices for the Ioniq 6, although this offer is exclusive to Australia. To sell the remaining 2023 models, the all-electric sedan now has a price reduction of up to AU$35,000 (approximately $23,000 at current exchange rates), making it more competitive with the increasing number of EVs from China.

The Ioniq 6 lineup now starts at AU$49,990 ($32,815) drive-away for the Dynamic variant, which includes all on-road expenses. Previously, customers had to pay AU$77,554 ($50,909) to purchase one, making it a tough sell compared to the Tesla Model 3, which starts at $60,205 ($39,520).

The mid-range option also sees reductions. The Ioniq 6 Techniq has dropped in price from AU$88,579 ($58,146) to AU$54,990 ($36,097), resulting in a saving of AU$33,589 ($22,049).

At the top end, the flagship Ioniq 6 Epiq is now priced at AU$59,990 ($39,379), down AU$34,142 ($22,412) from its previous cost of AU$94,132 ($61,791), including all fees.

Despite its specifications, the Ioniq 6 has not gained as much popularity as the retro-styled Ioniq 5, primarily due to its controversial design. So far this year, Hyundai has sold just 93 units of the Ioniq 6 in Australia, a significant drop from the 330 sold in 2024 and 417 in 2023.

In a statement to Drive, Hyundai revealed it still has 115 units of the 2023 Ioniq 6 left in stock and hopes to sell them all before the launch of the updated 2026 model year version.

For those interested in the base Ioniq 6 Dynamic, it features a 225 hp (168 kW) rear-mounted electric motor, a 77.4 kWh battery pack, and an estimated range of 381 miles (614 km).

Upgrading to the Techniq and Epiq models provides a combined output of 320 hp (239 kW) and 446 lb-ft (605 Nm) from a 221 hp (165 kW) rear motor paired with a 74 kW front motor, while the battery remains the same, resulting in a reduced range of 322 miles (519 km).
