The Lexus LS Redefines Premium Luxury Sedans. Now It's No More.
The inaugural Lexus LS from 1989 stands alongside the latest generation model.
After 36 years, Lexus is discontinuing its flagship LS luxury sedan—the vehicle that not only established Lexus as a brand but also reshaped consumer expectations for high-end luxury sedans. The brand will commemorate its departure with a limited Heritage Edition available in a Ninety Noir exterior paired with a Rioja Red interior. Only 250 units of these 2026 models will be available for sale in the United States. Once they’re gone, the LS will be no more.
This marks another unfortunate sign for sedan enthusiasts. Just a few years ago, we celebrated the LS as evidence that sedans still held a place in the U.S. market. While it remains a respectable and enjoyable luxury vehicle, it ultimately lacked the longevity needed. With sedans disappearing rapidly, it seems that no four-door vehicle is secure these days. If the LS can be cut, anything is fair game.
If you’re under 35, the excitement surrounding an expensive luxury sedan might appear exaggerated. However, for older millennials and those before them, the importance of the LS back in 1990 is likely remembered. For others, a retro review from MotorWeek may provide some context.
First, yes—that was what television looked like in 1990. Secondly, if this is your first exposure to these events and you find parallels with Genesis, then you’ve grasped my point. Japan was very much like Korea back then, still working to shake off a reputation for low-quality construction. My, how far we’ve advanced.
The original LS also serves as a captivating time capsule. It hails from an era when features like ABS and traction control were considered luxuries. My 1990 Mazda Miata, produced just down the road in Hiroshima, did not offer either option; ABS would eventually become available, but traction control wouldn’t arrive until 15 years later.
The 2026 Lexus LS Heritage Edition, limited to just 250 units, is priced at $99,280 (including destination charges) and comes packed with features, including the 23-speaker Mark Levinson audio upgrade.
