Mercedes-AMG is contemplating the development of a two-door electric coupe but is currently assessing the financial viability, according to reports.
The high-performance electric vehicle would aim to compete with Porsche’s well-selling 911 model. However, AMG remains uncertain about whether there is a sufficiently large market to justify moving forward with the project.
AMG has been open about its plans to introduce several highly powerful electric vehicles, having already showcased an upcoming four-door electric GT and teased a super-SUV built on the same platform and utilizing similar electrical components. Now, there are indications that AMG may leverage this expertise to create a genuine sports car that targets the Porsche 911 directly.
While AMG is confident in its technical capability to execute this project, the hesitation primarily revolves around the demand and whether there are enough potential buyers for such a vehicle.
“There's an emotional discussion and a rational discussion,” stated AMG chief Michael Schiebe during the Munich motor show, as reported by Autocar. “Emotionally, we feel we should pursue this. The question is whether the market is large enough to warrant the necessary investment. From a technological standpoint, we have the know-how.”
If AMG decides to proceed, the electric vehicle would not replace the existing two-door combustion GT, which was just launched in 2023. Instead, it would be positioned alongside it, utilizing a distinct platform and likely incorporating components from the SUV and sedan models.
The proposed rival to the Porsche Taycan – a production version of the AMG GTXX concept – is expected to feature a tri-motor system powered by lightweight axial flux motors from Yas, allowing the top-tier version to deliver up to 1,341 hp (1,360 PS / 1,000 kW).
Regarding the timeline for introducing a two-door EV, Schiebe refrained from providing specifics. He noted that due to the current slowdown in the electric vehicle market in some regions and the general apathy of luxury buyers towards costly EVs, a launch may not occur soon. Porsche currently offers two hybrid versions of the 911 (the GTS and the new Turbo) but does not anticipate releasing a fully electric model until well into the 2030s.
“We are currently very successful with our combustion-engined GT two-door,” Schiebe said. “Thus, our priority is on that, and we will evaluate when the appropriate time is to introduce a two-door EV.”
However, Schiebe also suggested that AMG might still consider launching an electric vehicle even if it isn’t expected to generate significant profits. “Occasionally, you develop a car that isn’t the most lucrative, but you proceed because it holds significant importance for the brand and its identity,” he added.
