The RS6 e-tron prototype has been observed even though reports suggest the project could be scrapped.
The internal combustion engine (ICE) RS6, which is set to feature plug-in hybrid technology, is anticipated to debut with slightly reduced power.
Both models are equipped with broader fenders and distinct design elements that differentiate the EV from the PHEV.
For more than two decades, the Audi RS6 super wagon has combined hard-hitting acceleration, all-wheel-drive confidence, sleek design, and daily utility, making it a desirable option for enthusiasts. Audi initially planned to offer two versions of the next RS6: one as a plug-in hybrid and the other as a fully electric e-tron. However, a recent report, referencing anonymous insiders, indicates a shift in plans, suggesting that the all-electric RS6 e-tron has potentially been canceled.

Nothing is confirmed, and Audi has not officially responded. Compounding the confusion is the fact that RS6 e-tron prototypes continue to be spotted on public roads, with spies capturing images on two different occasions over the last few days. This could suggest that the project is still in progress or that Audi is using the prototypes for testing other components before potentially discontinuing the model.
Platform Differences
While both combustion and electric versions are (or were, assuming the cancellation rumors hold true) expected to carry RS6 branding and a similar sporty wagon design, their platforms differ significantly. The ICE variant utilizes a traditional combustion platform, now the first RS6 to pair with plug-in hybrid technology. In contrast, the EV being tested is built on the VW Group's PPE platform, which also serves the A6 and S6 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, and Porsche Macan Electric.

Audi has yet to disclose any technical specifications, but if the S6 e-tron delivers 543 hp (405 kW / 551 PS), an RS6 e-tron currently under development could approximate 805 hp (600 kW / 816 PS). However, this figure would still be modest compared to the peak outputs of today's electric sedans, such as the Xiaomi SU7 and Porsche Taycan, which can reach up to 1,527 hp (1,139 kW / 1,548 PS). While BMW hasn't yet released an electric M5, the i5 M60 offers 593 hp (442 kW / 601 PS) at its peak.
We expect the gasoline RS6 to produce somewhat less power than its electric counterpart, possibly around 750 hp (760 PS / 560 kW), but it won’t necessarily be at a performance disadvantage due to its lighter weight—likely several hundred pounds less than the e-tron, which could weigh around 2,500 kg (5,510 lbs) due to its substantial battery.
Striking Design
Both prototypes feature wider fender flares compared to their conventional A6/S6 counterparts, with a vent in front of each door. However, there are significant design variances beyond the absence of the ICE model's large twin oval exhaust tips on the EV.
The electric version sports a split headlight design and a blanked-out grille, while the combustion RS6 has a traditional grille and headlights, along with larger outer air intakes, which the e-tron model does not require. Notably, the rear of the combustion car has mustache-shaped taillights, adding to its distinctiveness.

Initially, expectations were that the RS6 e-tron would debut first, with the plug-in hybrid following in 2026, both available in liftback sedan and wagon formats. However, with the recent cancellation rumors, this timeline is now uncertain. Until Audi provides clarification, the RS6 e-tron remains in a state of limbo, caught between public road testing and speculation about an early termination.
Editor's Note: This article has been updated to reflect reports suggesting the RS6 e-tron may be canceled, although Audi has not officially verified this.
