Aston Martin Recently Achieved a Significant Technological Breakthrough with Cyber Tires That Could Be Banned in America | Carscoops
The British luxury brand will soon feature Pirelli's Cyber Tires on its vehicles, which will relay data to an onboard ECU.
Aston Martin has announced that its upcoming sports cars will incorporate Pirelli's innovative Cyber Tire technology.
This advanced tire system communicates road data to the vehicle, allowing adjustments to the chassis configuration.
However, there are doubts regarding availability in the U.S. due to concerns about Pirelli's connections to China.
The ordinary car tire, that unremarkable yet essential piece of black rubber that keeps us on the road, is undergoing significant advancements, with Aston Martin poised to be among the first manufacturers to adopt this new technology.
Aston Martin has confirmed it will soon integrate Pirelli’s Cyber Tire technology into its new sports cars. Although the tires may appear typical, they are significantly more sophisticated. Conventional tires operate silently while managing varying grip conditions, leaving drivers and internal sensors to interpret performance. In contrast, Cyber Tires can analyze conditions at the contact patch and relay this information back to the vehicle.
Co-developed with Bosch, the Cyber Tire technology features a sensor located on the inner section of the tread that communicates via Bluetooth with the car’s electronic systems. By monitoring changes in radius from various compression levels and correlating this with vehicle speed, tire type, pressure, temperature, and wear, the car's systems can develop a comprehensive understanding of tire performance. This capability provides insights into tire behavior that were previously unattainable.
The technology can detect when a vehicle is at risk of aquaplaning or has strayed from a paved surface, and can automatically modify the chassis, powertrain, and safety features to enhance performance and reduce accident risks.
Initially unveiled in 2021, Pirelli's technology is already in use in the limited-edition Pagani Utopia, but Aston Martin’s announcement marks a significant move into broader markets. Other manufacturers are likely to adopt this technology in the near future, along with other tire companies.
However, American consumers and manufacturers may need to moderate their excitement about this tire technology. Earlier this year, we reported that U.S. laws restricting the “sale and import of connected vehicle hardware and software systems” could hinder Pirelli’s ability to sell in the U.S. market, particularly since the company is 37 percent owned by China’s Sinochem.
This relationship has raised additional scrutiny from regulators and could lead to delays or even prevent access to this technology in one of the world’s largest markets.
