Children of the '80s, celebrate! The Ferrari Testarossa is making a comeback—specifically, the new Ferrari 849 Testarossa, Maranello's latest supercar, which is undeniably impressive in appearance. Unfortunately, it lacks the classic pop-up headlights.

Unveiled Tuesday afternoon in Milan, the 849 Testarossa brings back one of the brand’s most legendary names, famously linked to the white Ferrari from the popular show Miami Vice. While it maintains a wedge-like shape, the overall aesthetic is more modern than nostalgic. The front, however, retains some resemblance to the classic Testarossa, showcasing a pointed nose and a very aggressive lower fascia that resembles a scoop.

As seen in the main photo above, the front three-quarter profile of the car gives off Daytona SP3 vibes, featuring a sloping roofline, oversized rear haunches, and a cockpit that resembles a fighter jet, designed to stand out with its contrasting black color against the body.

Interestingly, the rear end of the SP3 has more of a Testarossa influence than the new Testarossa, but that doesn’t mean the latter isn’t appealing. The 849’s rear has a minimalist design, following the style of Ferrari’s first plug-in hybrid, which it succeeds: the SF90 Stradale. If you look closely, you'll spot a unique ducktail spoiler inspired by the 512 S, split into three sections: two longer segments on either side and a shorter, less dramatic angle in the center. Depending on the driving mode and conditions, this section will expand for optimal performance.

Continuing the legacy of previous “red heads,” the new model features a mid-rear-mounted 4.0-liter V8, now with twin turbochargers. More importantly, this is a plug-in hybrid, similar to the impressive 296. It includes two electric motors at the front axle and one at the rear, integrated into the eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission. The combustion engine alone delivers 819 horsepower and 621 lb-ft of torque. Combined with the battery, the total power reaches an astonishing 1,036 hp. Yes, that's one zero three six.

Ferrari states that these figures allow for a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.3 seconds and 0 to 124 mph in just 6.3 seconds. This seems quite conservative, so I trust their claim. The SF90 already achieved these performance metrics, so the new 849 will likely be even quicker than anticipated. If you prefer a quieter drive in your Ferrari, it can travel up to 19 miles at speeds of 81 mph using only battery power.

If you examine the interior photos, you’ll notice the absence of a traditional center stack and, notably, no central infotainment touchscreen. Similar to the Purosangue I tested and other newer Ferraris, the infotainment display is integrated into the digital gauge cluster in front of the driver. Meanwhile, the passenger has their own screen for media access. The gear selector might be the sole nostalgic touch besides the name, as it has moved away from the “fin” or “spine” design seen in earlier models, adopting a more conventional setup reminiscent of Maranello’s old gated shifters like those in the Roma and Amalfi.

In a departure from previous practices, Ferrari revealed the convertible version of the 849 Testarossa simultaneously with the coupe, showcasing the Spider in a vibrant mustard yellow that complements the wedge design even better than the traditional red.

The price has not been disclosed, but as the saying goes, if you have to ask...

The 849 Testarossa is Ferrari's follow-up to the SF90 Stradale. We only wish it featured pop-up headlights.
