Utility terrain vehicles, or UTVs, commonly referred to as side-by-sides, are undergoing significant advancements. They have progressed far beyond their initial designs, becoming increasingly capable, comfortable, and notably more expensive. Not long ago, spending $30,000 on a utility vehicle seemed far-fetched—“Why not just get a pickup for that much?”—but we've moved past that perspective. Polaris' new flagship model in their work lineup, the Ranger XD 1500 Northstar, not only features the largest engine and most luxurious elements available but also carries the highest price tag.

And how much is that, you wonder? The unit I tested was priced at $51,994—seriously.

I utilized the Ranger extensively over several months at my family's campground in the Missouri Ozarks. Some tasks were straightforward, like transporting numerous full loads of trash bags to the dumpster, while others proved more challenging. I frequently used the Polaris as a makeshift dump truck, loading the bed so heavily with gravel that it struggled to lift. I also transported a full 20-foot oak tree cut into chunks from one location to another. Given that “XD” stands for “Extreme Duty,” I needed to ensure it lived up to its name. The tougher question, however, is whether it justifies its hefty price tag.

      Overview

Polaris offers four UTV models: the RZR, Xpedition, General, and Ranger. These models differ in their focus, from performance to utility, with the Ranger falling into the latter category. The XD 1500 model is the top-tier option and is available in two trims—Premium or Northstar—and can be configured to seat three or six passengers.

Distinctive features such as a more angular front fascia and overall size differentiate the Ranger XD 1500 from its smaller, lighter-duty counterparts. In its six-seat configuration, the XD 1500 measures 164 inches in length with a 127-inch wheelbase, contrasting with the XP 1000’s 152-inch overall length and 113-inch wheelbase. It is also wider, at 65 inches compared to 62.5 inches. The pronounced hood further distinguishes it within the Ranger lineup, as does its larger cargo bed.

Every Ranger XD 1500 is equipped with a dual-overhead cam three-cylinder engine that produces 110 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, all models feature Polaris’ Steeldrive continuously variable transmission (CVT), which is arguably just as important as the engine, as it relies on a 100% steel belt instead of a rubber one that can wear out over time. I’ll delve into that shortly. Always-on all-wheel drive with a selectable locking/unlocking rear differential is standard.

Driving the 2025 Polaris Ranger XD 1500

I began using the Ranger XD 1500 immediately after it was delivered to my home. There was flood cleanup necessary at the campground, which involved quickly hauling brush and driftwood to a burn pile. We skipped any formalities and got straight to work.

Upon entering the vehicle, I noticed many resemblances to a modern pickup beyond just the price tag. It includes features such as touchscreen infotainment, Bluetooth connectivity, and JBL speakers, along with multiple switches and buttons for auxiliary lighting, a winch, and power windows. The black-and-camo seats are even heated, though I didn’t require that feature since my testing took place from late spring to late summer.

While this represented a practical application for the Ranger XD 1500, it didn’t entirely capitalize on its impressive 1,500-pound payload capacity. Nevertheless, the larger bed was useful since I could fit more smaller branches and stumps inside while stacking oversized limbs and trunks on top. Plus, thanks to the electric power dump feature, I only needed to handle the load once.

My next task was more demanding. Our neighbor had fallen trees on his property, and we needed firewood. I drove the Polaris over—“Thank God I’m a Country Boy” by John Denver playing on the stereo—with a chainsaw in the back. Instead of bringing our 16-foot utility trailer into the woods, I backed the Ranger directly to the tree, which was primarily hidden among the underbrush. I wouldn't risk scratching a truck's shiny paint in this scenario, but since the majority of the Ranger’s body is plastic aside from the steel front bumper, I didn't have to be concerned.

Once the tree was cut into manageable pieces and loaded, I decided to try the XD 1500's Tow/Haul mode. Polaris claims that torque is maximized in this setting, and I could certainly feel a noticeable difference compared to Comfort mode. However, it left me wanting more. While power wasn’t an issue, Polaris suggests this mode serves as a substitute for a low-range
