Leading Ford's sales is the F-Series, with the Explorer following closely behind.

Ford has sold 34,000 Mach-Es this year, just ahead of the regular Mustang’s 31,000 sales.

Hybrids have bolstered Ford’s electrified offerings, with sales increasing by almost 24 percent year-over-year.

The automotive landscape isn’t always predictable. Once seen as a representation of sheer power and nostalgic gasoline engines, the Mustang now embodies a different image for Ford. The choice to use the Mustang name for an all-electric crossover sparked much discussion, but the statistics reveal how rapidly the industry has transformed.

While the Mustang Mach-E may not surpass Tesla’s Model Y in sales, it is now outpacing the classic Mustang.

According to August sales figures released by Ford, 7,226 Mustang Mach-Es were sold in the U.S. last month. Although this is a small fraction of the total 190,206 vehicles sold by Ford in August, it marks a noteworthy 35.3 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Year-to-date, Mustang Mach-E sales are up as well. Ford has sold 34,319 units in the first eight months of 2025, an increase of 6.7 percent from the 32,167 sold during the same period last year.

      A Comparison of Mustangs

The outlook isn’t as favorable for the traditional Mustang, especially in August. This year, 31,015 units have been sold nationwide, representing an 8.3 percent drop from the 33,817 sold between January and August of 2024. Year-to-date, the Mach-E has slightly surpassed the Mustang in sales, but the gap in August sales is much more pronounced.

As previously mentioned, Ford sold 7,226 Mach-Es last month. In contrast, only 3,235 regular Mustangs were delivered, which is a modest 2.2 percent increase from 3,164 in August 2024. Consequently, the Mach-E sold more than double the units of the iconic Mustang that inspired its name. This significant rise in Mach-E sales may be linked to the impending conclusion of the federal EV tax credit, likely prompting a surge in demand.

Examining sales across the Ford lineup, the F-150 Lightning saw a 21.2 percent increase in August, with 3,217 units sold, although year-to-date sales are down 9.7 percent to 19,077. The F-Series remains Ford’s top-selling model, moving 68,318 units in August, far outpacing the Explorer SUV, which sold 20,617 units.

      Hybrids Drive Growth

In August, Ford sold 10,671 electric vehicles, a robust 19.3 percent increase compared to last year, although year-to-date EV sales have declined by 5.7 percent to 57,888. In contrast, hybrids are driving much of the momentum, with 18,773 sold last month and over 155,000 sold this year, reflecting a nearly 24 percent increase compared to 2024.

Overall, electrified vehicles continue to represent an expanding portion of Ford's business, indicating a strategy that relies not only on full EVs but also on hybrids as an intermediary for customers who are cautious about fully transitioning to electric.
