The Mercedes-Benz G500 Cabriolet, a two-door convertible version of the G-Class that debuted around the year 2000, is often regarded as one of the least attractive cars out there. Nonetheless, it holds a special place in the hearts of affluent individuals. These soft-top G-Class models frequently sell for over $200,000, and sometimes even more. Therefore, the only surprising aspect of Mercedes announcing a new G-Class Cabriolet today is that it didn’t happen sooner.

To date, Mercedes has shared only a single teaser image along with two brief statements: “We are expanding the family further: a G-Class cabriolet is on the way. We will make the open-top G-Class available in nearly every market worldwide, including the US.” That’s all the information we have at the moment.

From the teaser image, it’s evident that the upcoming Cabrio will feature four doors. I suspect it will have solid sides and doors, with a sizable fabric roof that retracts backward to fully expose the top and rear to the open air, likely akin to the soft-top system found on a Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet.

We attempted to extract more details by increasing the shadow brightness in a photo editor, but it remains quite unclear.

I also submitted Mercedes’ teaser image, along with some context, to Google Gemini to see if it could predict what the final production vehicle might resemble. Honestly, I think this AI rendering will be pretty close:

While I'm personally not a fan of the G-Class, I am eager to see the actual version of this model. As I mentioned, I’m puzzled as to why Mercedes didn’t start producing these sooner. The G-Class embodies the ultimate Barbie Jeep, and a true summer getaway vehicle should be driven in the open air!

The current 2026 Mercedes G550 has a starting price of around $150,000, while the top-tier G63 is priced closer to $190,000. I hope Mercedes makes the open-top version available in both AMG and non-AMG variants; the G550 has more than enough power regardless. I would estimate the new Cabrio will start at around $165,000.

So far, there are no details on release dates or pricing, so we’ll have to wait for a leak or Mercedes’ next official announcement for more information.
