If you appreciate Lexus performance coupes, you’ll want to pay attention. This rendering known as the “Sport Concept” displays a strikingly cohesive design. With Lexus discontinuing the RC and gradually phasing out the touring-focused LC, there’s ample opportunity for an alluring new two-door model. In 2022, the brand trademarked "LFR," aligning with the naming convention of the now-defunct LFA. Is this merely a coincidence?
At the front, the likeness to the LFA is hard to ignore. The sides and rear showcase intricate bodywork that hints at a performance-oriented aerodynamic design we would anticipate from a successor to a vehicle that favors speed over comfort.
Speculation about the LFR project indicates it might house a front-mounted, potentially electrified V8 engine. However, there appears to be an intriguing silhouette under the rear glass of this concept that strongly resembles an engine cover. While Toyota is currently developing a mid-engine race car rumored to serve as a prototype for a new MR2, we haven't heard any similar whispers regarding Lexus. Let’s consider this merely an imaginative concept and move forward…
Lexus has also embraced some conceptual liberties with this design. A closer look at the rear deck reveals that the exhaust outlets are positioned beneath the spoiler. The object situated between the rear glass and the roof seems to be either a drone or a heat extraction system, though the latter wouldn’t be necessary unless there are powertrain components beneath that rear glass…
On Friday morning, Lexus released a brief CGI teaser video along with a concise press statement:
"This morning, Lexus introduced the Lexus Sport Concept to an audience gathered at The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering at The Quail Lodge and Golf Club in Carmel, California. This forward-thinking, authentically styled sports car represents the future direction for Lexus design. This inspiring concept vehicle features a wide, low-profile two-door design that harmonizes dynamic and emotional elements in envisioning a next-generation sports car."
We’ve been advocating for a successor to the LFA ever since Lexus discontinued it. Let’s just say we are more than cautiously optimistic; this is looking promising.
